Shumpei’s Birthday

Shumpei’s birthday was a hit. He claims it was the first birthday he has ever had like it. I think because it was more gaijin (foreign) style! It basically all started Thursday night because I couldn’t wait til Friday morning and had to give him his presents then…In Japan, present giving isn’t that big a thing for Birthday’s, Christmas and Mothers day/Father’s day type events….in fact I think he was slightly shocked by it all. Friday was his real birthday and I made him his favourite (burritos!!!…the most simplest thing ever for me to make but he loves them) and we went for ice-cream and rented out some DVD’s (One with Julia Roberts…for him!!). Saturday was the biggest surprise for him though I guess because I had organised a surprise party! I had booked 13 of us into an Izakaya for 2 hours of all you can drink with a set selection of food…and we actually managed to pull it off because until we walked into the room he thought it was just the three of us (him, myself and Leader) going for some drinks. There was even cake and candles, and more presents for him from his friends. It was a really good night actually…and I am glad that he had such a good birthday weekend. He claims that it is strange that I continued celebrating his birthday over a 3 and a half day period but to me that is normal….and even though he thinks it is strange I know he had a good time.

I managed to contact a high school friend of Shun’s and invited him as well…I think that was the biggest surprise…as a present from Ishi (the highschool friend) he got a tofu pillow….by that I mean a cushion shaped like tofu but with a face on it…It is not something you would see everyday… and only Japan could make something like that marketable.

It actually is living at my house now. I think Shumpei will be moving in with me soon…he spends most of his time here anyway…and lots of his clothes are here…he just doesn’t technically live here. But it seems that in a couple of weeks after we sort a couple of things out he will move in with me! It means i will have to attempt to start making more Japanese food….Will keep you updated on that…
