A comparison…

Had to go to the city hall today so that i could finally get health insurance because my visa was extended! YAY! I caught a taxi there because it soooo hot, but i phoned home on the way back so i walked the 3km back to my apartment. Now really that isn’t that far, but i never walked like that in Australia to get from place to place….I drove everywhere…mainly because i lived in the sticks and if you walked anywhere all you were going to see was trees and houses but also because it was so much easier to drive.

But it got me thinking, here i basically never drive (lack of car) and when i do hop in a car it is usually to move something or to go somewhere far away like for camping a couple of weeks ago. Here is why i don’t need to drive though, everything i need is just right around the corner…or sometimes just across the road.

A comparison between where i live now, and where i was living in Australia. Since i have come back to Japan though my family has moved closer to civilization.

Supermarket: Japan- 100m, Australia- 10min drive ( In this case booze comes under this category also)

24 hour convenience store: Japan- across the rd, Australia- 10 min drive (and its not 24 hours)

Train station: Japan- 200m walk, Australia 15-20 minute drive to a train station

A live house/club: Japan: Well there is a live house in my basement, and a club (WARP) a 3 minute walk away, Australia: Clubs in town, almost an hour away

Bar: Japan- 20m walk, Australia- 10 minute drive.

Post office: Japan- 200m, Australia- 10 min drive (for a postbox about a 5 min drive)

Department store: Japan- closest is Yuzawaya at 200m but Seiyu, Tokyu and Parco all within a 5 minute walk. Australia- Well a shopping centre is 10 minutes, for Myer or DJ’s 20 min drive to Carindale

MacDonald’s: Japan- 40m walk, Australia- 10 minute drive

Italian restaurant: Japan- next door to my house,

Nepalese restaurant, Indian restaurant, Chinese restaurant, Thai restaurant: Japan- 5 minute walk, Australia- 10 minute drive

Japanese restaurant: Japan- downstairs next to my building….and then many more. Australia- for a good one you’d have to go into the city which would take about an hour.

Bookstore (with English books): Japan- 2 minute walk to Yuzawaya basement, 5 mins to Parco Libro books, Australia- 10 minute drive

CD shop: Japan- 2 minute walk, Australia- 10 minute drive

Starbucks: Japan- 3 minute walk, Australia- I think the closest Starbucks is in town so an hour. Decent coffee maybe 10 minute drive.

Video shop: Japan- 5 minute walk to TSUTAYA, Australia- 10 minute drive to good old video ezy

Hospital: Japan-100m walk (dentist same), Australia- 15 minute drive

Police: Japan- 3 minute walk, Australia- 10 minute drive

Temple/shrine: Japan- 5 minute walk, Australia- well there is a church about 10 minute drive away

Park: Japan- 10 minute walk to Inokashira koen, Australia- for a decent park I’d say another 5-10 minute drive.

Icecream: Japan- well they sell it across the road but for Baskin and Robbins it is about a 3 minute walk. Australia- 10 minutes drive to ColdRock…sadly i have yet to find one here in Japan. Perhaps i will start it here myself…

A store that sells Vegemite: Japan 5 minute walk, Australia- 10 minute drive ( to be fair maybe u could get it at the servo after a 7 minute drive) What is with that statistic though???

Airport: Japan- Bloody ages, a couple hours maybe, Australia- 30 minute drive

To the ocean: Japan- No idea maybe an hour train ride, Australia- 7 minute drive

Did i miss anything?
