The weekend of Summer Sonic…
Well, I am finally getting around to posting about the weekend. And what a fantastic weekend it was. Summer Sonic, a music festival held over two days just outside of Tokyo and drew crowds of more than 10,000 people was a fantastic way to spend my first weekend back in Tokyo. The photo above is of Harry, from the Aussie band The Cat Empire, playing the trumpet near the beggining of the show.
The Cat Empire was definitely the highlight, jumping around near the beach stage, right near the front with Nicole (Who would marry members of the band if given the chance) and Shumpei, dancing around bare foot on the sand. God, it was fantastic. The first time i heard The Cat Empire on CD was an intresting experience. It was actually Nicole that sent me a copy of the CD all the way from Australia when i was living in Japan as a student. I have to admit i first thought “what the hell is this?” but by the second time through i was hooked.
The rest of the weekend was great, and the other highlights included Hoobastank, M-Flo, Beat Crusaders/Your Song is Good (Japanese), Arctic Monkeys and a band i had never heard of until Summer Sonic called The Feeling. I had to get up and go to work on Monday, exhausted, while Shumpei had taken the day off ( I think he claimed to his boss he had family commitments for Obon, the week long Japanese holiday happening now) but luckily i got to sleep in today.
Check out other photos of the weekend here.

A Cat Empire set is always a fun one - glad to hear you enjoyed it! How was the crowd response? I think this is their first visit to Japan.
Yes Japan was the last stop on their world tour i think. It was a great set, there were a couple of Japanese fans but compared to some of the other acts of the weekend The Cat Empire crowd responce was pretty low. Quite a few Aussies around though!
Loved them, can’t wait to see them again!!
