Telepathy…
Spotted outside a sock shop near my place last night after yakiniku dinner with Shun.
Shumpei and i for once were both coming home early without any other plans and at 7pm when i was leaving the office i rang him and said “wanna have dinner”. It was arranged, we would meet outside our our home station in 45 minutes. I caught subway to my first stop then got on JR line home. As i hopped on my train i looked up and saw Shumpei. Just before it arrived i had a feeling he’d be on it but i doubted we would get on the same section.
Now chances of catching the train in Tokyo and getting on the same exact spot as someone you know, especially in peak hour when trains come every 3-5 minutes is unheard of. When i left Japan in February 2004, i knew i had to go home and finish my degree even though i really wanted to stay in Japan. Leaving Shumpei and my other friends here was really hard and a lot of people came out to the airport and Shumpei had taken the day off work to drive me out there for my night flight. I had just said goodbye to most of the people i had lived with for ages and i was really upset for most of the 2 and a half hour to the airport. Especially since i would be leaving Shun in a matter of hours. He told me not to worry. That everything would be fine because he was certain we had the power to do 以心伝心 (ishindenshin) meaning telepathy. I didn’t know the kanji at the time and Shumpei wrote it on a napkin for me at the airport. I still have it, and it is up on my pinboard in our apartment.
As i hopped on the train yesterday, saw Shumpei’s face, we both looked at each other and said “以心伝心” I guess he was right! We can do it!
Now that we live together and know each other much better it must be strange for others to watch us. While we communicate in Japanese 95% of the time, my Japanese isn’t that great and I do tend to throw in a lot of English vocabulary especially when I am tired. I also shorten stuff, and make stuff up, and while other Japanese people might not understand Shumpei always does…no matter how nonsensical the words coming out of my mouth are. He knows what i mean. Other small things like knowing what he wants before he gets up to get it (usually a cup with ice in it!!!) and him doing the same for me.
Maybe it comes with knowing each other better now, but i like to think it is our brilliant telepathy skills!!! I think yesterday proved it….

That’s so cute
I’m so impressed you speak mostly Japanese to Shumpei, I’m also impressed he understands your made up Japanese. He is right, you must be very in tune with each other.
