Coffee…
I came home on Thursday and said to Shumpei*
Me:There is a great cafe near the school and it is so cheap so I will be able to study there before coming home
Shumpei: How much?
Me: 220yen for a latte
Shumpei: Veloce cafe?
He was spot on. I think perhaps he drinks too much coffee…

My latest coffee obsession is Hot White Chocolate Mocha from starbucks. The coffee at Tully’s is really good too. But the best coffee I have ever had in Japan is at a little cafe near Nissan in Roppongi….It is possibly the best coffee ever…they also had really nice breakfasts and lunches….despite being Japanese owned it was like going to a cafe back home!!!! It is actually a bit of a shame that I don’t work out that way anymore…..One thing I do not understand however is why Japanese people seem to think that a cappuccino needs to have cinnamon on top? I am not a huge fan of cinnamon so when I used to order a coffee at the restaurant next to work after lunch i would say cappuccino with no cinnamon please. And the waiter would go ” Oh you mean a latte”…How does cinnamon define a cappuccino and latte?
I never used to drink coffee…I think most people are like that at first right? The first time I lived in Japan at 19 I never drank coffee but I still spent a lot of time at cafes with friends especially on the weekend…Me with my orange juice and them with there iced coffees and hot machiatos. Everyone always saying…”oh you are young Laura but you will be drinking coffee soon.” I am not sure exactly when I switched over to the dark side but it was while I was back in Australia last year…I started out drinking mocha’s but now will drink almost all coffee although I prefer hot over iced…I think i figured that drinking coffee is such a social thing that I could no longer cut it by drinking juice and water. So at 20 I started drinking coffee and I am afraid now it will be a life long addiction….
(The first time I actually drank coffee and enjoyed it though was actually January 2005, while at the snow in Japan. I think however this was just a reaction to the cold…plus It was more like hot milk and sugar with a little bit of coffee but it was so good at keeping me warm!)
I now drink at least two coffees a day…Sometimes I make my own but usually it is on the way to work or school and then again at lunch time with a lunch set or something. I think coffee will come in handy a lot over the next 6 weeks while studying for my exam!! Is coffee, like beer, something you have to grow into? Is there anyone that actually liked coffee the first time they tried it!!
Ok I am off to buy coffee, study and watch Shun play soccer….

I’m kind of embarased to admit, but around exam times I CRAVE instant coffee, I can drink like six cups a day, then after exams I can’t even look at it.
I don’t mind a coffee but I’ve had some disgusting coffees in the past few years so I normally choose tea, it’s always the less disappointing option.
I quite like Starbucks, I used to drink it fairly often until I realised I was spending about $15 a week on iced drinks so I nixed that habit. The iced vanilla cream fappacino are my Starbucks drink of choice
Beer on the other hand, I hope I never grow into. It tastes disgusting, smells disgusting, and gives you a gut. I’d just die if I ever started to like beer. Ick!
P.S From my 6 months doing a hpositality course, the amount of milk and froth define a cappacino from a latte, cinnamon shouldn’t come into it (I don’t like it either).
I’m not a coffee drinker, but I LURVE the smell of coffee (from a bit of a distance – if I stick my nose right in the cup then it’s not so great!).
I worked as a barista (sp?!) for a little while, and I seem to recall that there’s more milk in a cappacino, plus the size of the glass as well… tho as I coffee non drinker I can’t tell you much more than that!
I don’t drink any hot drinks, so I think it’s a combination of my dislike of the bitterness and the dislike of super hot scalding in my mouth. I also don’t drink beer… or wine… or milk!!!
My regular coffee started this year when I began afternoon classes, it was an attempt to say awake, but when that didn’t work I just enjoyed the sugar & caffine hit that I got.
I would have to say that it is also a social thing for me as well.
My current favourite is the Caramellatte, it’s pretty much a latte with caramel syrup through it. Yummy, just the right amout of coffee and sweetness
I’ve had half a cup of coffee in my entire life and it made me shake so much that I’ve never bothered to have more…
Much cheaper that way
I was a bit ‘meh’ about coffee when I first tried it (unlike with beer), and it took years for me to develop into the full-blown coffee addict I am now. On a morning I grind my own beens and do the plunger thing…I love the whole process and find it really therapeutic.
I lurv coffee!
But seeing the Starbucks logo and considering you live in Japan, you’ve reminded me of the green tea frappuccino that I fell in love with over there. It was perfect in the heat and humidity!
Mildly interestingly, i’ve never, in all my 25 years, consumed a cup of coffee.
Do you beleive that?
Because i’m telling the truth.
Also, mildly interestingly, i’m an Aquarian too, but the American publications always want to make me a Piscies. I mean, i wouldn’t mind being a Piscies if they had a cool, generation-crossing song written about them. But they don’t, and i demand recognition for being of the Age of Aquarius!
fin.
Well off to bed and only had three coffees today. The best was a mocha for 220yen. SO CHEAP!!!
Jen- Yeah I know it is the milk (I realize now that when I started working in a cafe/restaurant last year it did not help put a stop to my growing cafine addiction…free coffee…how could you say no?)…cinnamon should not even enter the equation…..now the chocolate sprinkle stuff…well that is Ok!!
Enny- I don’t drink beer. I can drink beer if I am already drunk and have nothing left to drink. I did have a beer called hollandia once which was actually quite good but everything else leaves me feeling a little bit ill.
Renwick- Must go in search of a caremellatte I think…sounds devine. Then again I really should stop buying so much coffee…or looking for lunch sets that include a drink so that I can get a coffee…Tomorrow I am taking my lunch to school but I know I will still buy a coffee on the way or at the break…damn myself to hell
Tokenwoman- Yay, now I know your email I can apply to be added to your readers list. I was so sad when I realized I could not read your blog anymore!!! I wish I could go back to when coffee made me shake or get a little kick…It is something you never get back.
pomgirl- You are british…If you didn’t drink beer I would be worried…but then again they say that about some aussies to now don’t they. Shumpei wants a coffee grinder….I do not know why since he never drinks hot coffee and we have no space to put it. It we had space I think I would want one…
Chicky babe- I never really got into the green tea frappuccino BUT I am getting used to green tea and chinese type teas…ALthough I used to hate it. I am loving your Japan updates from your trip still…Your photos are awesome…Loved the boob puddings especially!!
mars- We should write to the president and do something about that shouldn’t we…Are you February 18th as well? or 19th perhaps? I don’t know if i beleive you about the cup of coffee…what about coffee from a bottle or can…mmm…coffee from a can!! I love hot coffee in the vending machines that comes out hot…I don’t think it is very healthy though!
I also have never consumed a cup of coffee, but this is 3 years more amazing than Mars’ efforts. I just don’t feel grown up enough to take the plunge.
