2 years ago in Tokyo…

Two years ago I was also in Tokyo for new years. My brother arrived in Japan just after christmas to meet up with me and it snowed the following day marking the first day ever my brother and I had ever seen snow. It wasn`t a lot but enough to get us excited. Two days later Tokyo had a record snow fall only a couple of days before the new year.

Here are some photos from that day. Considering we had a 17 degree day on Wednesday and the most rain Tokyo had seen in forever on Tuesday it seems so different from my snowy and cold new years two years ago…therefore making it a blog worthy moment.

These photos were all taken at my Japanese university, Seikei University in Kichijoji. I doubt Tokyo will see any snow this winter, and even if it does I doubt we will get as much as this.

HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!

Ps: Several days after this I went snowboarding…now that was a lot of snow!!

Pps: When this is published I will be drinking with friends…I am so organized for once in my life I managed to do a `publish on 30th Dec at 7pm` set-up thing. I am so proud.

Little Miss Sunshine…

Everybody should watch the movie called Little Miss Sunshine. I just did, and if was fantastic. I can understand why is it is in the top 10 movies of 2006. It was really funny (and strange) but the story behind it was really beautiful….(about a little girl and her family that travel cross country to get to a beauty pageant so that she can compete and the trouble that they go to get there.)

I have never been in a beauty pageant (that I know of) but it is enough to put me off them for little kids. Make-up on really young children is kind of tacky. I can understand dress-ups, with a bit of makeup, but beauty pageants are outrageous. I kind of feel the same about cute baby pageants. Because all babies are cute in their own way…and it seems so harsh (I suppose the babies don`t know it though) that you can judge one baby over the other.

Maybe I would feel different if I had been in one and liked it, but this is my opinion from watching movies and TV and from what I have heard. I am very informed on the issue…haha.

But yeah, public service announcement, see the movie!!

It`s over…

My Christmas cakeOur christmas tree

Christmas is over for another year. I actually had a really nice Christmas. Quiet and of course a bit different to what I am used to, but nice all the same. Shumpei ended up having to work on Christmas day but we spent the whole weekend together. On saturday we went to see the new James Bond movie (probably not new in Australia or anywhere else in the world but new to here), then out to meet some friends for dinner and drinks. Sunday, christmas eve, was the day we did most of our celebrating. Christmas eve here is like the biggest date day/night of the year. We got up early and went iceskating and then on to Meiji Jingu Shrine to write ema (wooden plaques that people write wishes and prayers on…we wrote ours for next year and hopefully before or just after new years the shinto gods will read them and our wishes will come true) We then walked around the grounds and out the back way towards Shinjuku. I had booked us in to have an early christmas dinner at a place in Roppongi and by the time we got there we were starving but it was well worth the wait with all the good christmas favourites including ham, turkey, stuffing, roast vegtables, beef, potato salad, many other salads, smoked salamon, dessert and much more. It was really fantastic to sit and chat over a bottle of wine and stuff ourselves silly with christmas food. Shun had only ever eaten roast chicken for christmas but he has now been converted to real christmas food. After dinner we walked through Roppongi Hills looking at the shops and then into the gardens and around outside where there was a lot of illumination and christmas lights happening. We even heard some opera style carols (weird huh?). Above is what our tiny little tree looked like.

By the time we got home we were exhausted from our whole day out walking around, iceskating and eating too much food. Shun did have Christmas morning off so we got up opened our presents and I made ham and cheese croissants for breakfast as well as champagne and orange juice(For about 10 years we ate christmas breakfast with our neighbours every morning before going off for family lunches and dinners and we always had smoked salmon or ham and cheese croissants….Shumpei asked if this was an Australian tradition but I had to tell him it was just our family I think…). We both got really spoilt. From each other and from my parents, friends and my brother and his gf. I love presents. I loved watching Shun open his presents too.

Christmas day for me, once Shun had gone to work, was spent watching the whole last season of Will & Grace while making earrings from beads my mum sent me. It was great actually, nice and relaxing after our busy Christmas eve.

Shumpei and I have to make our own traditions…I come from a place where Christmas is the biggest day of the year where as here in Japan it is not even a public holiday. Present giving, while it happens in Japan, it is usually only one gift and sometimes the males only give to the females and not vice versa but one of the best things about christmas is giving to other people and watching them open up their presents and watching their reactions. Christmas in australia is a time for family where as it is New Years here that is family time. We are learning about each others customs still despite having now known each other two years. This was our first christmas together in the same country and I think it turned out pretty well. I enjoyed having an international christmas…and I know Shumpei did too.

I hope everyone else had a fantastic christmas. I am just getting around to all the other blogs now.

Oh and D`Jen, this is for you. Shumpei has a playstation 3. I know how to turn it on…but at the moment we only have one game which is a robot game and I just do not understand it. I thought you would like to hear that we have one though…I know how much you like game thingies….Hope you are enjoying your wii.

Oh and the cake picture…I made it. Can you beleive it?? I made it a couple of weeks ago in a cooking class with Suzy. It was really nice and not very difficult. If I had an oven I would make it again!!!

Good times…

heFun & Friendships...

I have nothing really to post about but am sicking of seeing my face everytime I check my blog so thought I`d bump the new haircut post down a bit by posting this. This photo was taken in July at a house party in Kichijoji. James` had a friend who had a friend who was having a party and I live in Kichijoji and it seemed like a good excuse as any to go out for the night.

It is a couple months old but I really like this photo. I was looking for another photo when I noticed this one and realized I really have to print myself out a copy. Some of my closest friends are in this photo, and obviously that is Shun with his arm on my shoulder (Yes, and me drinking white wine out of a big plastic cup…Who said I wasn`t classy!).

This photo sums up the good times in my life. Friends (mix of nationalities, ages and occupations…), Laughter, booze, music (well you can`t see that but trust me it was there…) and good memories.

I would never have met any of these people if I had not come on exchange to Seikei University at the beggining of 2004. I spoke literally no Japanese. I had come out of a fairly long term relationship only about 4 or 5 months earlier and I was still hanging around with friends from highschool yet I was ready to move on. I left Australia in March and headed to Tokyo not knowing what to expect. I certainly didn`t expect that I would like it so much that I couldn`t wait to go back, or that my Japanese would actually improve so much (for the first 6 months it barely improved at all) or that I would meet a Japanese boy and fall in love (the boy that introduced us, Koki, with the glasses, introduced us) or that I would make such long lasting friendships. I am not sure exactley what I would be doing now if I hadn`t orignally come to Japan but I know that I made the right choices then and that because of that I am happy now. Everyone in this photo has played some part in making my time in Japan great and I want to thank them.

Cat- I still remember the first time I saw you. I had travelled what felt like days to get to Japan (Although really altogether it was only about 12 hours) and you and Phil were in the kitchen watching something when Nakamura brought me up and asked you to explain what she was saying. (Then megu showed up in her pink pajamas). Perhaps if we had met anywhere else we might of just passed each other on the street or at a party, but been thrown together in a place like the kaikan facillliated all kinds of friendships and I am really lucky that you and I were thrown together. The six months we spent together in Japan were amazing and you only have to look at the photos and think back to know we were having the time of our life. We first really bonded at Fuji Qyu Highland (probably due to the fricken scary haunted house). We both wanted to get back to Japan after we had gone home and we both did it. We are both together again. You are my best mate and you have done so much for me in the last couple of years and I really am so grateful and I know that no matter where we end up in the world and even if it is months between phonecalls or emails that we could meet up and take off from where we were when we last met. Have a safe trip home to Scotland for Christmas…counting the days til I see you in the new year.

James- After Cat left you told me something in Hiroshima that while at the time I didn`t like to hear but you were right, and because of you I went out and now my Japanese is awesome (Ok not awesome but it is a lot better!). Last year when we were all back in Australia you were always keeping in touch with everyone and making sure we all kept in touch. You are like the big brother I never had (although really you are probably more immature than even I ;-) ).That year that we spent in the kaikan together was amazing…there were lots of great times and some bad ones but we both came out ok right? You kept me sane that second six months…You are the best friend a girl could ask for. You and Cat along with Shun, are the main reasons I came back to Japan in the first place. You always listen and are always willing to help if I need it, plus you know really good thai restaurants. It is so good to all be together again!!

Mai- We met at a club in Shibuya, Xanadu. I didn`t even know that you knew everyone or that you had come with us but you got up and danced on the stage with me and Catherine and spoke English with me cos I had no idea what you would have said if you had said it in Japanese. Since then there have been many fun times and you are always up for a laugh, a dance on a stage or table or just to meet up for coffee and shopping in Shimokitazawa. You have the best style of anyone I know…You can pull anything off and always look faboulous. Lately you have been really busy with life and work but whenever we do manage to get together it is always fantastic. Can`t wait to see you in the new year baby.

Koki and Hifumi- Koki you introduced me to Shumpei. Well sort of. You held an illegal party in the 3rd floor kitchen and that is where I met Shun. You made sure he had my number and that I had his and while you were surprised when it actually all worked out I know that you are happy to have introduced us so thanks for asking me to buy that OJ on the way home and come up to the 3rd floor kitchen at 1am in the morning. Hifumi you made the best nabe at the 2004 Christmas party ever….It even tasted great the next day when we all sat around and raided the big Kaikan kitchen. I know you make Koki really happy and it was always great to see you around the kaikan and always great to catch up with you now.

Shumpei- We met only 5 or 6 weeks before I left to go back to Australia and I don`t think either of us knew what to expect. And now here I am back in Japan and we are living together back in Kichijoji, where we first met. There is lots I could say. Nobody thought we would last, well I do not think they did, but we did and now we are here together and really happy together. This is our first Christmas together in the same country and while our backgrounds are completely different and while we don`t speak the same language we make it work and I know this Christmas is going to be great. You love me no matter what, and no matter how insane things get you are always there to give me a hug and make sure I am ok. I hope we have many more great Christmas` together. I love you.

Thanks to all of you….You all play a part in my life and for that I am really grateful. Because of you, it is always good. There are other people in Japan that have made my time great. You know who you all are. Wishing you all a great Christmas and New Year…Here`s too many more fun times and great memories.

New haircut…Well here is a picture that I took myself in the bathroom 10 minutes ago (with the hideous fluro lighting…plus I tried to get a bit of a side view so that you could see the hair but it didn`t really work out…and there is only so many attempts you can try before you start to think taking a photo of your haircut to put on your blog is insane). It just got a cut and style, but it will look a bit different once I put product in it myself but I am happy with how it turned out. It is the shortest I have been for awhile so my mum will be happy (she prefers my hair this short, or shorter…) It is strange not having any colour in it…all the old colour has basically faded out but at least some of the colour tone is left. Will dye it again maybe in May when I am back in Australia or I might go the place I went to today. The guy that did my hair was really nice and friendly so I would go back…Have had some other recommendations for places as well, so I might shop around until I find someone I am really happy with….Because a girl really needs to have a hairdresser close by instead of going once a year in Australia :-)

Going out for dinner (seafood!!!) with Jen tonight. Suzy was meant to be in too but has a deadline, poor thing. But I have arranged to meet her on Friday for a crafty/coffee/catch-up day. It is freezing today and I think I will need a hat (Oh know it will ruin my hair…ha ha) and scarf when I brave the cold to head to Shibuya later. They say it won`t snow in Tokyo this year because it will not get cold enough so might need to head out of town to catch some snow this year or early next year. When I was here a couple of years ago Tokyo had one or two days which saw the most snow in about 15 years for Tokyo. It was fantastic…

Lastly, signed my contact at new school today. It is going to be good, I can tell!

Ps: Late addition~ Just read Suzy`s blog and she had a link to this site which led her to here. Instructions on using Japanese style toilet….Must see, So funny. I am not sure if it was meant to be ore not but Suzy is right, this should be sent to all visiting Japan. Thanks Suzy for providing the links!

Chop…

Bbq_roma_street_005

Well after months of procrastinating I booked myself in for a haircut for tomorrow morning with a Western stylist near Harajuku. I am just going to get a cut but leave the colour since It is so damn expensive!!

Haven`t exactly decided what I am going to tell them to do with my hair except cut it off. I haven`t cut my hair since August and it is usually fairly short so it is down mast my shoulders now when it is out. But I am thinking something like this (minus the colours so it won`t have the same impact obviously…and won`t scare away my new employers when I go sign my contract tomorrow afternoon.

What do you think? It is kind of hard to see it but you get the idea I suppose. This photo was taken pretty much exactly a year ago!!

Update…

Well if you read my post before this then you will know I accepted a job.

Thing is, the school that offered me a interview for next week, changed there mind and let me have an interview yesterday and despite accepting the other job I decided to go and check it out because it was an international school in Kichijoji.

Thing is I loved it so much and they loved me and offered me a job on the spot…I told them my dilemma…I had already accepted another job and the pay there was better so It was probably for the best that I stick with that. They said they would speak to owner about raising the pay.

Well the raised the pay, and after six month I automatically get a rise, and then after a year if they are happy with my performance then I will get another rise and a bonus. Plus the school was just so lovely, small, great staff, in Kichijoji and their curriculum was more what I am used to. I took it. I sign the contact on Tuesday and I requested that above all be written into it.

But I had to ring the other company and say `Sorry I changed my mind`…I felt really bad but I knew that I was making a better decision for myself and I explained to the other school why etc. He was kind of mean, but I guess that is understandable because I screwed him around. Yesterday I was really worried about it, and how I handled the situation but today I am really happy and glad I changed my mind and went with the school in Kichijoji that I know I will love and it is a place I could stay at for a long time (I think…and hope!). I know it makes me sound really flaky because I change my mind so much…I am not usually like this but more recently I have been because of all that went on with my last place of employment.

It has been a crazy couple of months and I made a couple of bad employment decisions and I didn`t want to do it again so I know that I made the right decision for myself. The school I accepted the job with first was more of a eikaiwa for kids (English conversation and ESL) with a kindergarten in the morning. I liked the school and the staff but their curriculum was not what I was used to and the day seemed very rushed. The second school in Kichijoji…I walked into and was really like `wow`.

I am actually excited to be going back to work on January 9th and this little school in Kichijoji.

So yay, Work is still decided (So happy it is all sorted now..AND BEFORE CHRISTMAS!!!)…Start January. Can not wait!

Blogging urge…

I have lost my blogging urge…I think it is because I have so much free time since I finished my exam and even had a fair bit when I went back to studying at the Japanese school that I am over using the internet.

How did this happen??

I have nothing interesting to write about…But I am alive and I have my trial day at the school tomorrow and I just got an email from another school saying that they might be hiring and would I be available for an interview next week. I said yes but if the trial day goes well tomorrow training for the job starts next week so If I get offered the position I will take it!

Hopefully it all goes well. Not working, and having no money, and relying on my parents and Shumpei to keep me here in Japan has gotten depressing. Didn’t think I would be saying this but can’t wait til I have a full-time job again! It has been a strange couple of months…I am glad I left my last job and I am happy I went back to school because my Japanese did improve and I think I passed the test but I am ready to go back to working, earning money and getting up before 11am. ( I would also like to watch less desperate housewives, My name is Earl, ER and grey’s anatomy and I never thought that would be possible either!)

I also hope I get my blogging urge back soon too!
