Akemashite omedetou…

Year of the Boar

Akemashite omedetou gozaimasu. Happy New Year, 2007, and welcome to the year of the boar.

That`s right, boar. Sometimes also refereed to as pig. Above is an example of a new years card known as, nengajyou. Most new years cards have pictures of the animal for the year with a new years message and they are supposed to arrive on January 1st….they are sent instead of Christmas cards basically. Japan follows the same lunar calender as China basically so there are twelve animals. Next year is the year of the rat (or mouse) and that is important since it starts the calender over again (every 12 years). Those who will be born this year, in the year of the boar, are considered to be very lucky.

Check below if you wish to find out which animal you are. This is a site explaining the Japanese calender (not the Chinese) so you might find you are a different animal than you thought especially if you are born near the beginning of the year than what you are according to the Chinese system. (For example I am an Ox, but due to the date I was born I would be considered to have been born in the year of the rat in China)

I am a Ox, like I said, and Shumpei is a rooster, and according to another site I looked at we are a really good match. I also match well with those born in the year of the snake. There are lots of sites out their explaining how it all works. I am a little bit confused because while Japan follows a similar calender to China it isn`t exactly the same because the Chinese new year is usually in late January or February (Correct me if I am wrong!!!) So since I live here, I am going with ox for myself.

New Year`s went well for me. The New years holiday started on Friday the 29th and continued until yesterday (So Shun is back at work today). I went out to Chiba to be with Shun and his family and we ate a lot, slept a lot, drank a lot and visited the shrine. I also went to onsen, saw some of his friends, watched Shun play some soccer and had a drinking party. It was a really fun couple of days but I am glad to be back in my apartment in Kichijoji. See flickr for some photos of the shrine and osechi which is the food you eat around New Year. We finished the holiday off with a game of scrabble last night. Me, Shumpei and his friend Kentarou. This was the second time Shumpei had played and a first for Shumpei and they both beat me. Kentarou does not speak English at all except for a couple of words but Shumpei`s vocab is pretty good and I let them both use electronic dictionaries. Big mistake. I LOST. I still can not believe it that I lost a game based entirely in English against two Japanese speakers. I have told Shumpei he has gotten too good and next time he can only use the dictionary to check spelling!!!

I was going to write about resolutions, but to tell you the truth I do not really have any. This year, as always, I want to lose weight and save money. But really I said that only a couple of months ago and so far nothing has happened. Oh well, if I come up with some then I will write them up.

All the best for 2007!!!!

I liked the above card cos it had cute baby boars too!!

Here is what the wiki says about pig(boar) people Jen.

The Pig type is usually an honest, straightforward and patient person. He/she is a modest, shy character who prefers to work quietly behind the scenes. When others despair, he/she is often there to offer support. This type of person is reserved with those they do not know too well, but as time passes and they gain confidence, those around them may discover a lively and warm-hearted person behind that mask of aloofness. Despite those born in the year of pig having a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, they have few close friends who understand them and share their inner thoughts and feelings. It is easy to put trust in pig type; he/she won’t let you down and will never even attempt to do so. Such people simply want to do everything right according to social norms.

It is important to remember that these people are not vengeful creatures. If someone tries to take advantage of him/her, the pig type tend to withdraw to reflect on the problem and protect themselves. All they need in such situations is a little time to find a constructive way to respond. The people of the pig type are conservative creatures of habit. They dislike being made to travel too far from familiar surroundings, unless it is a trip to the country. They love nature and are never happier than when they are out somewhere, far from the city.

There is a tolerant and peaceful side to their character. Such people are never afraid to allow others their freedom of expression; they do not want to cause arguments and if there is any way to avoid arguing, they will probably take this option. They are not weak, however, and if the situation forces them to fight these people will rise to the occasion, whether it is to defend themselves or those close to them. People of the Pig type are the most admired by others

On another site it says you should stay away from other pig people and that you get along well with sheep(rams) and rabbits!!

    Is it close?

    It’s pretty good!

I agree with everything in the first paragraph very much!

I am a creature of habit but I don’t mind travelling, I am not a huge nature lover, but I do love the beach so I guess that counts as nature.

I pretty much avoid arguements (particularly with partners) and one of my most favourite quotes/mottos is “I may disagree with what you say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it”.

So overall I guess it’s fairly true description of me :)

I thought Shumpei sounded like a decent fella, now I know - it helps we’re both Roosters.

I’m a monkey, which sounds about right without even bothering to read the description. heh.

Jen- I do not know you very well in real life but even I thought it seemed a bit like you!! I kind of liked reading some of the decriptions…bit like star signs but with a different take. Shumpei pointed out that there are 12 starsigns in a year where as only one animal per year.

Boysenberry- He is a decent fellow. You both are, obviously!! He wanted me to point out though that in Japananese the say year of `tori` which actually translated into English means bird not rooster…However the picture they use is of a rooster/chicken. So I guess it is ok. My parents are both snakes…which might explain why I have a fairly good relationship with them!!

B- A monkey hey? I had a quick look at the summary and basically it says you are highly intelligent and able to influence others (Apparently a lot of politicians were born in the year of the monkey). Inventive and talented but easily discouraged. You get on well and form good relationships with Rats and dragons and you should steer clear of Tigers. How does that sound??

Born leaders who will work hard to achieve their aims. Dependable, good organisers and not easily influenced by others. Patient, loyal to their friends and expect loyalty in return. Tend to have lasting relationships. - This is a short explanation about ox`s. It is very close to me actually. I can be very selfish also which isn`t really written there (might be on another site though). I am getting really into looking up about ox`s and roosters and finding out more about this. I am surprised I am so interested because while I read horoscopes I am usually a little bit blase about the whole thing.
