Wrong place…Wrong time…

I was having a great weekend. My cold was over, I was feeling good. Met up with my new work friends, Cat and some others for some drinks and karaoke in Shinjuku on Saturday night. Came home with this…

6 staples later...Lot of blood...

I want to point out, before I had six staples in my head I had a great night!!! It all just went a big wrong.

Basically a friend of a friend got really drunk. At Karaoke he was all over the shop and when one of his female friends tried to take away his beer he pushed her a little. She was next to me so I put out my hand to grab the beer and push it away to help her. Well at was faster I guess cos he grabbed the beer glass with his other hand pulled it away and hit me on the head with it. I didn`t really see it coming.

The rest is a bit of a blur. I remember Trevor, Stefanie`s (who I work with) husband holding paper towel after paper towel to my head and blood all over the place and reassuring me I would be fine. One girl crying and saying sorry (She was the one he pushed)….This all happened while two others were singing Under the Sea from the little mermaid….strange that I remember something like that really. I remember security, lots of staff, lots of paper towels. Then ambulance people arrived and that was when I got really scared since there were at least 15 ambulance staff ( NO JOKE!) and 6 or 7 cops. And while I was been told I would be fine…it is not very reassuring to have that many people fuss over you…it makes you think your are dying and that all those people telling you that you will be fine are lying.

I didn`t file charges although was urged that I should. Wasn`t really in the mood to talk to police men though. The police said something about maybe ringing me sometime in the next 2 weeks in case I change my mind. I won`t. I think because it happened in a public place if they decide to they can file charges and sue him anyway.

The guy came to Kichijoji today to apologize and give me money for medical expenses. He doesn`t remember anything he says. Was very Japanese about the whole thing. Money in an envelope, almost got on the ground to bow and say sorry. I thought he was going to cry….

Personally I hope I never see him again. I hope nothing bad happens to him either though. I know he was drunk. I shouldn’t`t have done anything but I did and now I got six staples in my head. Trust me when I say that getting staples in your head too, is just what it sounds like. Actual staples. Feels like that too.

Luckily, after another visit to the doctor today I could take off the bandage and wash my hair. Staples will be in for another week though. There was beer in the glass that he hit me with (Thing giant heavy German style beer glass) so I was really happy to be able to wash my hair today since It smelt like blood and 48 hour old beer. Not pleasant.

Ps: I really need to thank Trevor, Catherine and Sumi for everything. Cat and Sumi for taking good care of me in the ambulance and coming to the hospital and waiting. Sumi for taking care of all the Japanese stuff and answering questions about my name address etc etc. And to Trevor, because of his quick thinking I didn`t lose nearly as much blood as I should of. He kept me calm.

Pps: Sorry about the white head band Jen!!! It got a lot of great use before this incident!

Ppps: Sorry to any of you that get queasy over blood.

oh lulu, what an horrendous experience! you poor baby, that must have been just terrifying. i know there’s nothing i can say, but please let me know if you need or want anything - bags of chips, rice, natto, a beer, magazines, i don’t know, but i’m only a wee train ride away.
    sleep lots.

and really, let me know if you need anything.

    Oh Dear. Ouch!!

I’m glad you’re coping with the incident ok. I’d be a freaking mess scared to go anywhere ever again. I hope you heal soon, Lulu.

Holy crap Lulu!! You poor thing!!! I’m glad that you have finally been able to wash your hair and that the bandage has come off… i hope it doesnt take too long to heal. What a scary experience!

It’s good to see you have such nice friends looking out for you though :)

  4. Jen, 30. January 2007, 5:03

    You poor dear!!!

What a terrible accident, was it just the weight and force of the beer glass that split the skin or did the glass smash? Was it intentional or did he mean to pull it away and knocked your head in the process.

I’m with you though, I wouldn’t have charged him. From my perspective now, I’m all “OMG, what a prick!” but I can imagine he didn’t really know what he was doing, and the fuss that charging would cause is so much more hassle than it would be worth. I think it’s pretty decent he made the effort to apologise and give you money, even if it was more protocol driven than personal.

I hope your head feels better soon, did you have a massive headache as well, just from being clunked with a beer glass?

P.S I didn’t even realise it was the same headband, I actually admired the nice baby pink color. Please don’t say sorry that had your head spilt open by a beer glass, I’m willing to bet you didn’t do it for the sole purpose of wrecking the headband I send you :P

Wow. This is the first post of yours I have read. What an introduction!!!

What are the staples for? To hold your brains in? Or just to make sure you never have a good hair day again. I guess you were lucky there was no internal bleeding… well I guess there wasn’t!

Who knew Japan was such a dangerous place?? Good thing you had good people around you to look after you! The ambulance bit must have been quite terrifying especially in a foreign country. At least it is a clean one!

  6. babs, 30. January 2007, 11:14

Get well soon, Lulu! I’m so sorry your night got ruin. Take care of yourself & rest up if you can!

  7. Enny, 30. January 2007, 11:19

    Oh Lulu!! That’s terrible!!!

I completely understand about the stress of the people stressing you more - that would’ve been horrible.

Hope you’re not feeling too sore or headachey and you get lots of attention to feel better (and thank goodness there were people there to help with all the medical stuff!).

  8. Amanda, 30. January 2007, 11:53

Oh no Lulu! That must have been so scary, especially with so many people fussing over you.

I’m glad the guy came to apologise etc. I know that some of it was because of Japanese culture, but since he was nearly crying, he must have meant at least some of it.

Lucky you having good friends to help look after you, it can make all the difference.

I hope your head feels better soon, and you can have good hair days again!

  9. steph, 30. January 2007, 12:30

Holy fucking shite! you could have been killed!

You poor thing. Did you have much of a headache?
Hope you’re healing ok, not just physically cos I’m sure you were very scared onced the shock wore off.

    ((big hugs))

  10. Jac, 30. January 2007, 18:13

    Oh. my. GOD!!

I’m absolutely floored by this! I read the whole thing with my mouth gaping open!

I’m so sorry this happened to you, Lulu! Hope it heals quickly!

  11. Lulu, 30. January 2007, 18:31

GG~ I rested on Sunday but I was back at work yesterday and had private lessons last night after I went to the hospital to get it checked again. I am actually OK apart from a bit of a headache. I think it is gonna hurt more getting the staples out. I will let you know if I need anything but I am pretty sure I will be fine!!! Thanks though!

Chesty Larue~ Well I don`t think I will be drinking with that person ever again but apart from that I am fine. Will be a lot more wary of drunk people from now on though. I am always wanting to help, but now I think I will just ignore everyone I see!

Deb^ Well it`s not bleeding anymore which is a good thing which means it is healing. So that is good. I guess heads are tougher than they look!!! My friends were fantastic. Shun came to the hopstial later on (he was home sick poor thing!) and I think he had a bit of a fright when he got the call cos we were in the ambulance with siren going when Sumi spoke to him!!

Jen- It was definitely intentional but I think he was too drunk to realize what he was doing. He wasn`t a small guy either so lot of force behind it. I know that the police can still charge him because it was in a public place and he ran from the scene (everyone said he should go before police arrived. Even me in my hazy state) but he came back. They took the cup…The police I mean. Well at least I think they did.

I am on the improve now…hardly had a headache at all today. For first couple days I was quesy and sick from concussion I guess but today was all good! Freaked out one of the kids with the staples though! Didn`t mean too…bent down to help with shoes and my head was in her face. She was fine though!!

Aussie RC~ welcome!!! Thanks for stopping buy. The staples are too hold the cut together I guess…supposed to be better than stiches…but it leaves more of a scar from what I can tell… but hopefully my hair will over it. I think they are easier for heads or something. It is the strangest thing to touch.

Wasn`t the first time I had been in an ambulance though…but first time for a Japanese one!! It was more scary because of all the people than everything. There was a bit of a crowd in the hallways of the karaoke place and waiting outside…not nice having people staring at you!

They did a CT scan and my brain was OK apparently! Nothing coming out. I do hope that it heals ok, but I guess I am always going to have the reminder of the night in the middle of my head!

babs~ thanks!!! After tonight I only have my normal job for the rest of the week…so nights are free so I will be able to rest, surf the net and watch TV all the time! Yay!

Enny~ Thanks Enny. I actually feel heaps better than Sunday and yesterday so I am definitely on the improve. I hope it never happens again tho!

Amanda- I know the guy felt bad. I was a bit embarrassed when he came. I am sure he feels worse than I do really since I am sure he is a nice person normally. He knew a lot of people that were there, and I guess they will never look at him the same again either.

Steph~ Still got a dull headache and a bit dizzy at times but its heaps better. I think I was lucky I didn`t see it coming cos that meant it was right on top of my head. I was fully scared when all the people showed up but by the time I got to the hospital and it was just me, a nurse and a doctor in the room I was feeling better.

    Thanks for messages everyone!

  12. Lulu, 30. January 2007, 18:32

Jac- You snuck in! Thanks! I was really shocked at the time, but the more I think about it, It could of happened to anyway. Some drunk people are violent…it just means they shouldn`t drink, or shouldn`t drink so much. I told the guy that yesterday when he came. I said I hope from now on he wouldn`t drink so much and he said he wouldn`t but who knows!

  13. Sar, 30. January 2007, 21:26

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeet! What a story - I hope you took the money. And the guy goes to AA because he is clearly an alcoholic. Drunk people flash their boobs or argue, Alcoholics do things that are totally off the scale.

    Sheeeeeeeeeeeeet.

    and thrice shit.

  14. suzy, 31. January 2007, 8:59

Oh no! That is awful - and much more traumatic than your cab accident. I hope you are feeling better soon. x

  15. Mandy, 31. January 2007, 9:29

Oh you poor dear!! My heart goes out to you hun! Like you said, you were in totally the wrong place at the wrong time! But at least it didn’t get you in the eye or the face I suppose. But still…it looks very painful. Poor thing!

Oh well, if you go through a metal detector and it goes off, at least you have an excuse now, apart from all the heat that you’re packing! ;) hehe Oh and it could of been much, much worse….you might of needed a shunt!

My love and best wishes I send your way!

  16. mars, 31. January 2007, 11:18

oh my god! staples in the head looks brutal. jesus. what a rip, and you were only trying to help too.. hope you are better really soon!! xo

  17. Katie, 31. January 2007, 18:00

Abunai! I was shocked too when I first read this post yesterday!(I was at an Internet place in the city & couldn’t reply. I can just picture it all happening. You poor thing!. I wonder if you would have gotten stiches instead of staples if it had happend in Australia. You know how medical stuff is a bit different in Japan. I love “under the sea”..once had to do a dance to it at our undoukai. I have a CD of all the Japanese versions of the disney songs. Hope Shun is taking extra special care of you and wish you a speedy recovery!.

  18. Jen, 31. January 2007, 18:58

It is so bad that it was intentional, I thought it was possibly a bit of a misjudgement and your head got in the way. I’d be REALLY mad in that case, I wonder if the police will end up charging him?

I wouldn’t be able to touch staples if I had them in my head, you are so brave!!

  19. yuki, 31. January 2007, 20:22

ack ack ack that is painful!!
i hope it won’t cause you trauma or anything.. :/

  20. Char, 2. February 2007, 17:54

OH MY!!! Oh, ouch! I can’t believe he actually hit you with the bottle! It’s just like in the cartoons, but such a terrible idea in real life! I can’t imagine staples in my head. . . :( I hope you feel better!

  21. sushi, 2. February 2007, 20:33

oh wow how are things now? So sorry to read about this horrible happening - does this mean you probably don’t love karaoke anymore?!
My mates (Mark, Nick and Erin) say to send their best wishes - they were just as shocked as I was!
Please please take care of yourself
Thanks for your other message I left my phone at work but got it this morning…I will email you!

  22. Adam, 5. February 2007, 18:18

Holy Whoa Lulu!! Staples in the head, I thought this was going to be a story about rogue stationary. You poor thing. I hope it doesn’t scar too bad, but I kinda also hope that it scars a little and you’ve got a cool story forevs- you’re the only person I know with a kareoke injury.

  23. audrey, 5. February 2007, 20:06

Abunai indeed! Sorry to weigh in late Lulu - all I can say is that I hope you heal soon. Do you need some good Australian gossip rags to get through it?

  24. audrey, 5. February 2007, 20:07

  25. Lulu, 5. February 2007, 21:46

Sar- Yeah I truly hope he doesn`t get that drunk again and hit somebody else and kill them.

Suzy- Thanks!!! I have had some bad luck this year with been in the wrong place at the wrong time haven`t I!! Hope you got home safe!

Mandy- Thanks! Hows things going? You still coming to Japan in the summer? Or your winter?

Katie- I am pretty much all better now. Just got a bit of a scar that is healing. I am not sure about the staples and stiches. The scar is pretty neat. I think they use staples if they want to close you up really quick and because I had been drinking the blood wasn`t stopping any time soon so they stapled me together!! hehe.

Jen- The staples weren`t so bad, just annoying when washing hair, When they came out on Saturday I washed it ASAP because I stil. hadn`t been able to get rid of the blood while the staples were in!!! It was intentional but I doubt the police will charge him because I requested they don`t.

Char- Oh it wasn`t a bottle. It was a giant beer glass!! It was a bit surreal like a cartoon i suppose!!! At the time I had no idea what was going on, I guess it was shock.

Sushi- I still love karaoke. I just won`t be doing karaoke with that guy again. I want to do karaoke on my b`day! Tell your mates HI!!! I look foward to meeting them again,

Adam- It will scar, but kind of small…but the hair won`t grow back there they said. While it is a bit long luckily it healed really well and is quite skin!!! Also really luck it is going that way and not the other way. If it was the other way then my hair would stick in strange directions!!! I am the only person I know with a karaoke injury too…that is pretty cool!!

Audrey- Thanks! Thanks for the offer Audrey and I would love magazines! I am a huge fan of gossip!! Thanks for stopping by!

Yuki- I am fine now!!! I will however be a lot more wary of drunks from now on!

  26. Marika, 6. February 2007, 7:22

Oh, you poor thing! Perhaps after it’s healed and you’re ok with it all you can make up a magnificent story about when you wrestled a crocodile in your backyard because it was trying to eat your dog. Or something :)
    Hope you’re all better.

  27. Miss Natalie, 12. February 2007, 10:50
