Kids say the darndest things…
When I was younger we had this book with kids describing their families along with pictures…
I remember there was one kid that wrote `We have a baby and it is as big as a brick` well today I had a day where the kids at work were saying the darnedest things….and they were cracking me up as much as that kid that wrote about his baby been as big as a brick. (I will have to ask my mum if we still have that book…It really was the funniest thing!)
Me: When you grow up what do you want to be?
Boy aged four (one of my favourites!!): ummm…
Me: Astronaut?
boy aged four: Noooooooooo……….Umm
Me: Doctor?
boy aged four: Noooooooooo.,…ummm
me: company man?
boy aged four: noooo….
me: What then?
boy: I want to be a robot!
Well good for you kid! I hope that works out for you!

Later on in the day I ask the oldest girl in the preschool what she wants to be and she replies `Carpenter……..or a dentist` I don`t see the similarities but hey, good for her! I was most impressed by the fact she knew the word for carpenter…I certainly don`t know it in Japanese.

Teacher:What did you eat for breakfast this morning?
Girl aged three: I ate…um…chocolate cake.
Teacher: Are you sure?
Girl aged three: *pauses* definitely *nods head defiantly as she says it*
I doubt she ate chocolate cake…but I also have no doubt she believed what she was saying.

We also have a little girl aged three who tries so hard. She has recently started coming to preschool five days a week instead of three and it is such a shame but she will be leaving end of this month (along with quite a few others who are graduating to Japanese kindergarten) And anyway, in that time, her English has improved so much. She never used to communicate in English with her preschool friends but now is constantly trying out new phrases. We are not sure were she picked it up but whenever she drops something or falls over she says `woopsy daisy`. It is the cutest thing…
Whenever she wants to use the bathroom she shouts at the top of her lungs `Me toilet` `me toilet` or `(“______`s(her name) toilet`. We have tried correcting her…even trying to get her to try saying `Toilet please` like some of the other younger children do. (I know people will say that we should teach them correct grammar, and we do when we are siting down for circle time, or lunch time or during games but during free time etc when kids are free to do what they want we are a lot more lenient about how they use English…as long as they are trying we tend to leave it since most of them are only three years old. The older children aged 4 and 5 we correct pretty much all of the time since they have been at the school a lot longer…)

That’s so cute!! I’ve been really enjoying your posts lately, Lulu. Especially liked the ‘when i was a kid one’.
Hey so are you actually teaching the kids english over there? have i got the right end of the stick???
I love talking to kids about what they want to be when they grow up.
I was speaking to a Chinese preschooler on prac who told me she’ll be like Barbie when she’s older.
I really hope the little boy gets to be a robot
I wanna be a robot too :o)
Deb- Thanks!!! I enjoyed writing the when I was a kid post actually!
I am teaching kids English I guess. Although the kids that come to the preschool, while they might not speak much at first, because they come 5 hours a day 3 or 5 days a week they get pretty good pretty fast. Basically though we run it like any kindy/preschool…obviously with a bit more of a focus on phonics and english learning games etc. It is themed base and we have facilitated free time, circle time, story time, outside time, lunch, quiet time (puzzles or books, classical music), free time again, craft , music and movement and then we have phonics, vocab mixed with some conversation practise and games (Like I said we don`t correct them all the time, because if they are using english it is better to let little minds go with the flow a little, but during circle time and afternoon phonics and vocab/phonics/game time we make sure they use the right tense for example of verb because that is something the kids tend to mix up a lot). The focus is on them learning and using english without them feeling to pressured I guess. A lot of international school are set up that way here since there is usually a mix of kids. Like for example from April we will have one native speaker, a german speaker and some japanese kids all in the preschool class. They have to be able to cater to all needs……
There are afternoon classes too for older kids aged 4 to 7 some based on writing and reading others based on conversation. There is a lot less time and we might only see them for 2 and a half hours a week but they also have a longer attention span so doing more conversation/writing/reading based activities works ok with them.
I rambled a bit there. Email me if you want more info and the website of the school which has a bit more info.
Jen- Me too! I used to love talking about it when I was a kid so I figure the kids I work with now feel the same way. I think this little boy will do something sciency for sure. He loves space and he enjoyed the science week we did with how wind works and bubbles etc. He knows how many moons neptune has…what kind of 4 year old knows that stuff. And can talk about it in a language he has only been learning since september!!! While he can be a handful he really is a brilliant kid!
Enny- Well then I wish you the very best!!!
Awww, sooo cute! I love the age you’re working with. Old enough to have minds of their own, but young enough to still be cute about it.
p.s. I want to grow up to be a robot too!
