N is for Nancy Drew…
In an effort to improve on my writing I have decided to sign up for Encyclopedia of me which started over at Bella Dia (and which I found out about by reading Laura`s blog here...)

N is for Nancy Drew…
As a child I could always be found with my nose in a book…Once I bought 200 books at a school fete for $10 because it was the spending money mum gave me but I was on crutches so couldn`t go on any of the rides or walk much.
I am not sure when I first read Nancy Drew…or who gave it to me but I would say I was about nine and I think it was my mum who maybe gave me a three in one book which I probably went through in like a day! It was easy to get a lot of other Nancy Drew books second hand or at the public library!
I loved those books!!! I wanted to be Nancy Drew! eighteen, a blue mustang and a gorgeous boyfriend named Ned not to mention who two best friends (George and Bess I think it was?!) I thought she had it all…Not only that but she had curly strawberry blond hair and was smart enough to solve any mystery! She was a bit like the Scooby Doo Gang, except so muc cooler!
It isn`t even that my favourite books from childhood and adolecence were Nancy Drew (My favourite were Anne of Green Gables, The Orphan Series by V.C Andrews, Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta, Alison by Margaret Watts and Dear Venny and Dear Saffron….oh and maybe chuck in some Judy Blume books also!) but they were easy and fun to read and I must have gone through hundreds of them.
I donated most of them to a hospital when I moved to Japan for the first time but once I have children old enough to read Nancy Drew I am going to go out and buy lots of them for them. I do hope my children are big readers like me!!!
Mandy was a sweet valley high junkie! Do you still have them babe? While I never really got into Sweet Valley I did read a lot of teen trashy romance novels from the 80`s (I picked them up at that fete!)….I don`t remember the name of them….sweet teens or something?? Oh and lets not forget the Baby Sitters Club….I think I read all of them also! Actually I read everything including some of my mums mills and boons I think!!
Did anyone else read Nancy Drew? Or did you have a different favourite series and hero/heroine that you read? I have many favourite books from childhood and would love it if you could share yours also!!!!

I liked Nancy Drew too. And I loved Anne of Green Gables - I read the whole series, and have kept them all at my parents’ place. Actually, I should read them again some time. But the thing I was really obsessed with in about year 6 and 7 was Agatha Christie mysteries, especially the Hercule Poirot ones - I think I read them all.

I only had a few Nancy Drew books. Did read Sweet Valley High and also Trixie Belden. Sadly, I got rid of all mine in a major declutter one time leaving nothing to pass on to my own kids.
Which is doubly disappointing given some of the junk published for kids/preteens these days. Although some of the old favourites seem to be making a comeback in bookstores.
I have to admit I loved Nancy drew too!! Her books were one of the sets I recently got rid of! And Anne of Green Gables - I owned the whole series! I also loved sweet valley and the baby sitter club. I also liked Judy Blume’s books - somebody recommended her to me, but I forget who it was! But I remember loving the “Secret Seven” and “Famous Five” series. I would race down to the library in primary school hoping to find one that I hadn’t already read! I also read The hardy boys… I went to the Lifeline Book shop in the city many many times!! lol… I got the whole collection of Trixie Belden books from there too! Sadly, I too have had to get rid of all my childhood favourites
OMG! I loved all those books you mentioned, but I only started getting hooked on V C Andrews when I was 15.
Secret Seven and Famous Five was my obsession when I was about 10. Gosh, I even had the whole series of Hardy Boys. But my mom gave all my books away when I went to boarding school.
And it was the Mills & Boon series when I was 13 - 16. Hehehe
Oh Nancy Drew and VC Andrews were my favorites!!! I had to stop reading VC Andrews though because they were SO utterly depressing. They’d send me into a funk.
Oh man, I LOVED Nancy Drew until i was old enough to move on to VC Andrews, which means grade 6.
I loved that list, total walk back through memory lane!!!
I totally forgot that I love VC andrews - I admit, I still do. I still buy the new books when they come out!
Suzy: Thanks for the link! I actually read keri smiths blog so have the list printed out and in an envelope in my journal!!!! I only ever read a couple of Agatha Christie novels but really should have read more! Will one day get around to them!
Lightening- I have heard of Trixie Belden but not sure If i read any. Would have to ask mum, she`d remember if I did or not! Might have to track some down and read them! I did keep some of my childhood books to pass on to my kids but I wish I could of kept more!
Nay: You and I have very similar tastes in books I think! Even now! I think once we are both in Japan we will be sending books back and forth between each other! By the way Sara is passing on Losing Kei to me and I will bring it to Australia to give to you! I never read Famous Five or Secret Seven though, although I do know a bit about them. They are the kind of books I think I will make my kids read! Oh I still by V.C Andrews books also….I am reading the series that started with Black Cat now (need to by the second book back in Australia if it is out!) My advice, don`t get rid of your childhood favourites! Especially if someone can store them for you…sure do a bit of a clean out (and if you don`t sell them, the mater hospital always appreciates books!) but keep all your favourites for sure! I really must look into Trixie Belden I think!
Lina: I have book obsessions still! All the time! I only ever read a couple of hardy boys but always liked it when Nancy Drew and the Hardy boys hooked up to solve a mystery! hehe! It is a shame your mum gave them away!
castocreations: I still read V.C Andrews! I have read them all (except for the ones that have come out most recently! I still love them but you are right they are a bit depressing (and weird!)
Sherrie: Thanks! I think I could still read Nancy Drew! I think I will read a couple when I am back in Australia…..would love to sit in bed all day and read. I never do that anymore cos I am on the net so much! I really should go back to reading more instead of spending all m time on here!
I liked Nancy Drew as well!! I remember borrowing a lot of them from the library. I was a huge reader when I was younger so I pretty much read all of the “popular” tween series. Sweet Valley Kids, Twins, and some of High, Baby Sitters Club, and Sleepover Friends.. I wonder if that was released outside of America.
I reread some of my old BSC books before I came to Japan, but feel like I’ve out grown them! I actually wrote a lot of stories as well but thats embarrasing so I’ll keep it a secret!!
I’m with Lightening, I loved Nancy Drew, but Trixie Beldon was awesome!
I’ve got rid of a lot of books, but I have a full set of 52 classics which include things like Black Beauty and The Secret Garden. I wish I’d kept my Trixie Beldon, but if memory serves they were falling apart by the time I turned 13
I loved the whole Anne of Green Gables series too!!!! : )
Loved when Gilbert called her carrots and she broke that slate over his head!!! LOL! : )
