Fear…

I have a fear of falling down stairs. Yet I almost always run up and down them in particular those at train stations which are actually the stairs I fear the most.

In my last year of highschool I fell down the train station stairs while running for a train…I almost hit my head but luckily I didn`t. Instead I scraped all down my legs and blood spurted out every where…turning one of my white socks red. I am pretty sure someone stopped to help but I can not remember- I do remember been so embarrassed though that I wanted to die.

My boyfriend at the time was on the train and while he didn`t see me fall, his friend sitting with him did and apparently laughed all the way to the next station where they got off to wait for me since I would be on the next train. I ached for days! I ran into this guy last week (the friend of the ex boyfriend who saw me fall down the stairs) and that is when I remembered this and started to worry about falling down stairs again.

Another male friend heard about me falling down the stairs (A lot of people did- high schoolers are shocking!) and made me a cape with a star on it that he attempted to hand sew himself…He nicknamed me queen of stacks and I am sure I have that cape somewhere.

I fell down another set of stairs in primary school too and scraped up my legs and hands then too. Big concrete stairs and I still have a scar just below my knee.

But why is, even though I am so scared of falling down stairs, that I continue to run up and down them?

Does anybody else have any fears?

Are you kidding? I have such an irrational fear of snakes that I don’t really like going into my own yard.

I hate heights. Hate, fear, hate. Bah.

I have minor jolts of fear around stairs sometimes, but only if I think about it- normally I don’t know anything of it at all. Like you, I’ve fallen down stairs a couple of times. I’ve also fallen *up* stairs a lot of times. Not nearly as painful, but still hurts, and still embarressing… I can definitely relate :)

I have a fear of birds (especially magpies)…. was swooped in grade 9 whilst walking to school, and like you with your red sock, my whole top of my uniform was sopping wet with blood… Then the next day the same stupid bird swooped me again and I bit through my lip whilst attempting to duck… Needless to say I nearly cry whenever I see a magpie

I also hate being at home by myself at night - I have to turn on all the lights and have some noise or I will scare myself sh*tless…

Sorry to hear about those traumatic memories coming back. Hopefully they fade again with the passage of time.

As I’ve mentioned many times in my blog. I’m terrified of BUGS. In particular any bug that stings or bites. Wasps, bees, spiders, mukade… you name it I will be running away as fast as possible while screaming at the top of my lungs.

Sarah- I can understand the fear of snakes- although I am almost certain there are none in the backyard so I don`t mind going out there! hehe! Thanks for stopping by!

Pricillia- I am ok with heights although my partner is not a fan…he doesn`t even like been up in high buildings! It wasn`t until we went to the top of a high building in Tokyo to see the view that I even found out he didn`t like heights!

Amanda- I have fallen up a lot of stairs myself actually! haha! and it definitely does bloody hurt!

Nay- I didn`t know that. I have been swooped by magpies (and plubas) but not in a long while. We had a Japanese exchange student when I was younger who hated birds and when we went to seaworld and saw a pelican I actually thought she was going to faint! A lot of Japanese people have a fear of birds actually- i am not really sure why. This girl was even afraid of swallows though!

Doesn`t your mum have a bird at your house?

marianne- I used to have a fear of elevators?! But you mean escalators right? Are you afraid of tripping? It seems a lot of people have a fear of hights- does it extend to flying?

Sara- Yes, I know about your fear of bugs. I think you would hate Australia! There are spiders everywhere!!! hehe! I do know how you feel about Mukade especially ;P

I am allergic to hornets! Not like I will die allergic or anything I just swell up something shocking and it stays that way for a couple of days- I have been stung twice. Wasps and bees don`t cause any problems though! It is a little weird!

I so understand - I just remembered that I rolled down the stairs at a train station once, when I was in high school too, and boy it hurt! We had these stairs at the granny flat (aka rat’s house) we lived in on the side of the PIL’S place when I first came to Tokyo. The stairs, while only half-stair cases of about 4 or 5 steps were sooooo dangerous, they actually sloped down, so of course U was always slipping right off, and sliding on my butt down them. When we moved, I vetoed all the terrace houses etc that had stairs. Even now, I am scared every time we go to PIL’S house because there is a staircase from the living room to downstairs. I push the sofa in front of it, but I am still paranoid that K will fall down them.
I also slipped down an outdoor escalator at Ala Moana Shopping centre in Hawaii once, in the rain. Now THAT was embarrasing, alone in a foreign country and bleeding everywhere haha, but more so, I was in pain - those escalators are really spikey! I think I left a bloody trail as I limped back to the hotel to clean up. I am extra cautious on escalators now too!

I’m utterly terrified of birds and bugs. I have no good reason why I feel like this - no bad experiences or anything but I watched the opening scene of”The Birds’ by Alfred Hitchcock and there were some people out fishing on the lake and a flock of crows just flew down and attacked the people. I turned off the movie, traumatised and now I’m scared that a bird is going to come and peck out my eyes! It’s crazy because we don’t even have crows in New Zealand!! The bug thing is also a mystery. I just hate them all - spiders, ants, cockroaches, moths…the list goes on. If one comes near me my heart starts to pound and I run. If one comes into my house, I scream and cry! It’s terrible! My fiancee has developed a fear of heights after I took him to Dreamworld and we went on the big drop and tower of terror. Then we went up the Q1 the next day and he discovered this fear. I thought it was great fun visiting these places but evidently my enthusiasm was not shared………
