Heaps and heaps of great info everybody! Thanks!!!! It is great. I planned on getting started on something this weekend...but didn`t but might try tomorrow night if I can. I did buy some material and a pattern to attempt to make a singlet top and my mum will help me. I have also been looking up patterns for headbands and other simple stuff like babies bibs!

My hand sewing would be crap- I can barely even sew on a button. But I hope to work myself up to it, one day!

Promise to keep you updated! Also wanted to say thanks to those of you who commented for the first time on this post and the post after! Yay for new readers!

well, if you really want to make things and don't feel like fighting with the machine, there is nothing wrong with hand sewing.... I have made tons and tons of stuff...at a snail's pace... and loved every single stitch. also, as luck would have it, I put 3 kids through hoikuen and didn't even make one bag.... we just used what we had on hand and hand-me-downs!!!

you don't need a machine to sew!!!!

Haha you sound like me! I got a new sewing machine (after complaining that the one I had was so old etc) for my birthday in September last year. I only just opened the sealed box about 2 months ago and now I can't get enough of sewing things!! I've made an origami cushion cover, a doll, and i found this fantastic crafting website (www.oneprettything.com) which has links to tutorials for everything!! I'm going to try out this tutorial (http://www.skiptomylou.org/2008/09/02/3383/) which looks quite simple and is useful on the weekend... (maybe be even good for small pressies too!! )wish me luck!!

Don't worry about it being 15 years old - the machine I used up until last year was my mum's 21st birthday present, so 30 years + :)
If you have trouble threading it, try taking it along to a local sewing machine shop - they are usually staffed by nice sewing types who will help you out. I have turned up a few times with my machine when it was being temperamental and they've always been able to sort it out.
To start sewing, just practice on anything you have handy... often Vinnies has fabric, and that way if you mess it it up it's no big deal. Then, when you get your confidence up you can venture into Lincraft / Spotlight or (very dangerous!) online fabric shopping. This post has lots of links to online fabric stores.
Amy Karol's book "Bend the Rules Sewing" is good for ideas for beginner projects too.
Good luck!

No advice to offer, but when you learn how to thread the bobbin, can you come and teach me? haha. I think I am going to take the plunge and buy my own sewing machine this weekend.

By the way, why don't dogs have a belly button? No wait, I will go google that myself and find out.
