Whale watching…

I had never seen a whale in its natural habitat until Saturday when myself, Shun & his school friend Kaori and her friend Kana got up super earlier (ok not too early but 6am is early for a Saturday!) and headed into town to catch a bus out to Redcliffe for a whale watching day out.

We boarded a big boat (one of two allowed to do whale watching in Brisbane) and headed out past Moreton Island to see if we could catch a glimpse of some whales.

We were really really lucky to catch sight of a mother and her baby who swam up close to the boat and put on a bit of a show. The guide guessed that the calf would have been about four weeks old and he definitely wasn`t camera shy.

Close to boat...

I must admit I was happy to hear that the boat and the guides will glide up to a pod but if they disappear under water and don`t come up to breathe very often then they leave them alone and look for another pod.  In fact the first two whales we caught a quick glimpse of quickly disappeared so we moved on leaving them be.

We had lunch on board (including prawns! Yummy!) and fell asleep on the bus home. Been out on the water all day can be quite exhausting. It was such a great experience though.

How cool! I’d be horrid to go out with - I get super seasick just from looking at the waves! But luckily, there are lovely people like you who kindly post photos on the net so it feels like I’m not missing out so much! Thanks Lulu!!

Heather- It was pretty awesome! Something I would love to do again sometime.

AkiraSabine- Thanks for stopping by! The water and the weather that day were glorious and I think a lot of people on the boat wanted to join them!!!

Gina- I love prawns too! Especially in summer! Will definitely be on the christmas menu this year. The whales were amazing!!!! I am sure your boys would love to see them one day- so put it on the agenda if you are ever in Australia

GirlJapan- When did you live in Australia? Wow! I knew you had visited before but didn`t realize you lived here- and so close to where I am from!!! Redcliffe is a BEAUTIFUL area!

Nay- It was great- something you and Naoki should definitely look into when you are in Australia one time. The boat leaves from Redcliffe at about 10am and gets back in about 3pm.

Jessica- I am not to bad with seasickness- I used to sail :P however since we were going out in the bay we all took a seasick tablet before we took off! Glad you liked the photos- you could always try your hand at a sea sickness tablet and give it ago. There was definitely A LOT of people that got sick though, I have to say.
