Lust…
I am in lust over two different DSLR cameras…
It is on my 101 things list to get one and I am desperately hoping I can con anybody planning on giving me a christmas present into putting in money so that I can get this (I figure Mum, Dad, Brother and gf & Shun might…)
Aren`t they beautiful…

The problem is I can not decide which one i want more…
I have always owned Olympus cameras personally although I have used a Nikon DSLR before as that was the camera we used to take photos at the preschool I worked at…
The Olympus E420 is cheaper. very compact and light for a DSLR and has in built image stability. The Nikon D60 has had good reviews, and I have used a Nikon DSLR before (I can not remember the name of it).
So I need help- which would you choose and why? Have you used either of them and maybe could perhaps offer a little guidance.
At the moment it is just a dream, and by the time I actually get a DSLR there will probably be a million new ones on the market. I am off now to try and rationalize to my family and Shun why this is what I want for Christmas…

We have a Nikon D80 and I really like it - except that I’m not a professional, so I know that there are a million features that I don’t even know about to know how to use. Mister had it before I met him, but if I had to choose, I’d go for the D60. I think it’s a bit friendlier towards the non-pro. I haven’t used Olympus cameras a all since I’ve always used Nikons - even my point and shoot is a Nikon.
Thanks Kirsten- I have heard really good reviews about Nikon`s and that is why I am swaying even though I usually go for Olympus- I think I want to go to a shop and try them both to feel how they feel in my hands as well….but it may just make me fall in love even more!
V. exciting!
I am a Canon girl, so I don’t know much about the Olympus or Nikon, although I have heard good things about the Nikons. I would tend towards that because its one of two big brands and maybe there’ll be more lens/accessories/support available? If you haven’t already, check out dpreview.com to see what they say.
I have the Olympus E520 and I LOVE IT!!!!
My husband is the camera buff and he’s always had Nikons but we’ve been big-camera-less for about five years now and he spend months reading and researching. In the end for me I felt that both Nikon (can’t remember which one he’d narrowed it down to now…) and the Olympus were high quality cameras and it didn’t really matter which we bought.
On the other hand I have very small hands and the Olympus is MUCH lighter than the Nikon or indeed any of the the cameras I handled. I love that about it and can hold it very steady even with a fairly heavy lens on it (the lenses are all as heavy as any other lens of its type.) It is also fairly intuitive and I began using it without reading the instruction manual with few problems, though it’s better since I did spend some time with it!
Most of the pics on my blog since August are taken with the Olympus and I have been very, very satisfied.
Hope this helps!
Guera- Thanks for stopping by to offer your opinion- I was hoping you would even though I knew you used a canon!!! Always good to hear from others. Nikon & Olympus should be able to get a fair bit of support in Japan since they are both Japanese brands & I figure with the way the internet is I should be able to find a forum for info if need be!!! I went back to your post yesterday about when you first said you were wanting to get a DSLR camera and read what advice others had given you there….So I checked out flickr to see most popular cameras etc!!! Off to check off Dpreview now too!
Vicky- I love your photos and so happy to hear you use an Olympus…I would not be able to afford a 520 but I am sure they are very similar…I am glad you liked the Nikon too!!! I think the next step for me will be trying the both- going to the shop and holding them.
I think due to cost I might end up going for a Olympus…also because I have heard the interface is simlar to there point and shoot which is what I have always used…
So exciting!!! I hope my wish of getting one comes true soon!!
I have been reading camera reviews on several cameras for many months and have concluded that the Olympus line is worthy of purchasing. I have been very impressed by the 420’s and 520’s photo qualities. They also have some features that make them unique in their price range….wireless flash and compact lenses are a couple. Be careful if you are looking for image stabilization as the 420 does not provide it in the body of the camera. The 520 does. Unless you have access to a cache of Nikon lenses and flash accessories, I would think seriously about staying with your Olympus history. If you are still looking for a small SLR, you may want to surf around and see it the Panasonic DMC-G1 fits your needs. It was just introduced and is the potential look of future compact SLRs. Have a great time.
Paul- Paul T? I actually made a mistake yesterday when I posted and meant the 520- I realized after I wrote the above comment back to Vicky- and I am definitely starting to think the Olympus is going to be the one I go for!!! In fact, spoke with my dad today and he says he would be quite happy for him to mum and put in and get it for me for Christmas. Yay!
THanks for stopping by and offering your opinion!!!
i used olympus compacts through three models, and loved them. really, they took the (good) pictures themselves. awesome camera company.
as you know, we recently got the nikon D60. it’s something yoshi wanted, he said he did research on it. and it was the second most popular model sold at the shop where we bought it (the first being one of the canons, can’t remember which one, but was probably way over $1000). it’s nice, i am looking forward to learning to use it and taking awesome pictures, but i read on ken shamrock’s site that the D40 is just as good, and much cheaper.
both are more than just cameras, they are systems. i guess i would recommend the nikon D40, but the olympus i am sure will be great, too!
