Off to see the wizard…

…and Jamesy & Melbourne…

Am so excited!

James ( one of my best friends in the entire world- him, Cat & I studied together at Seikei) will be in Melbourne, his home town, for 10 days from the 11th of December and Shun & I have just booked tickets to go down on the 12th until the 15th.

Plus, I booked tickets for the three of us to go see Wicked (Hence the wizard reference!), which has been getting rave reviews all over the world. My brother & his gf Gem saw it when they were in New York earlier this year and said it was brilliant!

James` brother still lives down in Melbourne in the family house so we will all stay there which I believe is not very far from the city.

Things I definitely want to try and do in Melbourne

- Catch up with James and talk and talk and talk- I won`t have seen him in more than six months!

- Wine tasting in the Yarra Valley

- Catch up with Gen & Alice (Other old friends from studying in Japan who are in Melbourne also!)

- Take Shun on a tram

- Take Shun to the casino (It is amazing inside & out- I especially love the fountain!)

- Go to St Kilda

- Go to the markets (not sure which ones yet though?!)

- See Wicked (definitely happening!)

What else should I do? I am thinking I might try to do a little bit of Chrissy shopping while I am down there for mum & Gem (Have finished most of the rest of it!) as well as a bit of shopping for myself perhaps!

I have not been to Melbourne in over six years so it will be great to go back!!! I need some other “must see`s and do`s!” so suggestions welcome!

It will be another six months before I see James because he won`t be back in Australia until our wedding in May (He is Shun`s best man!) !

You’re going to Melbourne? I hate you. No not really but man I love that city. :)

Hmmm, things to do in the city… IF you get nice weather the new (to me anyway!) Federation Square area is great with lots of outdoors spots to peoplewatch and funky cafes etc etc (but then Melbourne really is just one big cafe, yeah??) The Vic Market has gone down hill IMHO. Way more trashy touristy stuff than I remember. StKilda craft market rocks and it’s on on a Sunday, too! There are now two lookouts over Melbourne (Rialto and Eureka Tower) but they’re both pretty pricey. The giant ferris wheel is finished now and even if you don’t go on it it’s all lit up and looks amazing at night.

You know the Yarra Valley is a bit of a drive from Melbourne, yeah? Beautiful though. We had our honeymoon there. It was a disaster but that was my exhaustion, stress and morning sickness rather than the area!

Phillip Island for the penguins? Daytrippable or email me and I’ll get you B&B with my parents. Seriously. They love visitors and have been known to bring in strangers off the street so a virtual friend of mine would be no problem!!

That’s all I can think of for now. Hve fun planning your trip and have a latte for me (cappuccino is passe, darling!) ;P

Sorry Lulu, I’ve only been to Melbourne once and that was about 7 years ago so I’m not really sure what there is to do/see! I did almost all the things you mentioned and enjoyed them. I also went to the Melbourne Aquarium, which I enjoyed but I love going to Aquariums. I once went to the one in Ikebukuro’s Sunshine City and it was totally cracked me up (and weirded out FH) how all the Japanese people kept saying ” 美味しそう!” while looking at the fish! Haha! Japanese people crack me up. On a sidenote, well done to you for getting your Christmas shopping done. I’ve done a little bit but hit a wall with this cold! Hope you enjoy Melbourne!!

    Go to Haighs!!!
    NOM NOM NOM!!!!
Then you can mail me some dark chocolate mint frogs ;o)

If you were looking for somewhere to stay, we always stay at the Sebel, it’s very nice.

The Zoo is also quite nice in Melbourne… and if there is any AFL on (which I don’t think there is) then I would highly recommend that!

The flames outside the casino are pretty awesome too - I think they’re every hour?

Wicked is fabulous, you’ll love it - I saw it last year.

Very jealous that you’ll be in Melbourne, so much great stuff to do!! Go and have breakfast at Grocery Bar in St Kilda, my fave place for breakfast. Markets - you can’t go wrong with South Melbourne market, and there is a beautiful arts and craft market in St Kilda on Sundays. If the night markets at Queen Victoria market are on when you’re there, go! They are great!!

The best sushi in Melbourne (and great coffee too) can be found at Plush Fish on the University of Melbourne campus in Parkville. Don’t know how authentic it is, but it tastes great!

While you’re in the area, have a gelato or Italian hot chocolate at Brunetti in Carlton, just off Lygon Street. Further down that road is a really cool bar with wrought gold candlesticks and chandleirs and fake fruit in opulent bowls, it’s like being in a Botticelli painting.

A visit to Koko Black (either Royal Arcade, off Bourke St Mall or Lygon St) is also an absolute must. Try Chocolate Buddha in Fed Square for dinner if you can get a table. And you MUST try the Shanghai Dumpling House - it’s in Tattersalls Lane, off Little Bourke St, just up from the entrance to China Town. You either love it or hate it, and I’m in the former!! So cheap too - once we had dinner there for my birthday, eight of us including drinks was about $50.

Oh man. I feel a bit homesick now. Must keep thinking of London things I love instead :)

    Have a lovely weekend! xx
