80`s goodness…
On Saturday night my friend Dani celebrated her 24th birthday in style with a 80s themed party complete with blue eyeshadow, Wizz Fizz, Care Bears cakes, bad hair and fashion, Culture Club & MacGayver (Remember him?)- you can not get much more 80`s than that!
Oh and by the way my no drinking for January went out the window however I am now alcohol free til my birthday I would say which is mid Feb (and hey I lasted til 24th!!) I may have gone a bit overboard and I am really really really hoping it hasn`t jeopardized my chance of a weight loss this week.
It was such a fun night with me wearing my mum`s wedding dress (She married my dad in 83), coral eye shadow and taking my hoops (more 50`s and then 90`s but hey!). Shun was not much into the dress-up idea however he claimed his new haircut to be 80s (very true with his curls!) and donned a red eye mask to go as Raphael from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. We through about having him go as The Karate Kid but I could not find any plain white material to make his head peice from- so red it was!!!
Dani played the perfect host as Rainbow Brite. Dani and a Cyndi Lauper look alike (Alana) below.
There was of course plenty of bad 80s fashion
And a Michael Jackson look alike as well as a pacman couple!
We got into the hooping groove later on in the night. Spreading the hoop love is a must at any party!
And lets not forget some MacGayver love!
We had a great night!!! I was a little worse for wear on Sunday though…
More photos from the night can be found here
In other news the hairdresser got a bit of a shock when he cut Shun`s hair despite me telling him it was naturally curly. The more he cut off the more he realized what I was saying was true. He had never cut curly asian hair he said- I think he got a kick out of it. I like Shun`s hair short (he usually has it chemically straightened!) and curly (okay more fuzzy now than anything but still) but he hates it. He is counting the days til he can get it straightened again in Japan- I swear he spends more time and money on his hair than me!!!

What a cool idea for a party!
The costumes are fantastic and I bet your mum never thought her daughter would end up hula-hooping in her wedding dress!
I like Shun’s hair. I can’t remember which one Raphael was- Nanchakkas? I had a serious crush going on when I saw the movie. *^_^*
You look like you’re all enjoying the summer sooo much… sob.
How about a post about how much you wish you were over here freezing your butt off? ;P
haha I cam cracking up.. I love the 80’s! I graduated high school in the 90’s but I remember the 80’s and love all the music and movies..
Wow that looks like such a fun party!! I was a kid of the 80s as well! I loved 80s music (still do) the cartoons.. not so much the style :p
You look so cute in your moms dress!!
Looks like you had a wonderful time at the party!! I loved the photos!
I like Shun’s hair! Reminds me of KimuTaku in CHANGE. They look a bit alike, I’d say. (Always a good thing) hehe
I love the 80’s! They had the best games and toys and tv shows.
You look fantastic. Work that hulahooop~~~!
Thanks for uploading the pics!
Hey Laura,
Thanks for the comments. We should definitely catch up some time. I usually work til 5pm so what say we grab some $4 Coronas at the Irish pub in Queen Street one Friday after work? I suppose you could drink Pure Blondes or something, if you REALLY wanted to keep within your diet’s parameters. But I say, let’s do something crazy like get chips and gravy as well. You only live once! Although, as a reformed fatty (although I suppose I am more relapsed these days) I always resented that person that exerted peer pressure to eat unhealthily. Forgive me.
I like Shumpei’s haircut. Very otokomae!
And just love the get up on everyone.looks like a good night! I once went to an 80s party in a lilac bridesmaid dress with puffy sleeves and ra-ra skirt. It was a sight indeed.
Normally, I can’t stand the 80s — but that looks like it was such fun and Shun’s Raphael costume even made me a little, tiny bit nostalgic!
Heather- It really was a fun night. Rapael was the red one who had two little knife/sword things. All I really remember about TMNT is that I got to play Leonardo since my name started with L and so did his, when we played the game in my friends back yard.
I am okay with the weather here in the last week- thank god I am not in Melbs though otherwise I think I would be wishing I was freezing my butt off since they have 44 degree temps this week. Crazy!
Girl Japan- I graduated 2002
– what I remember of the 80s though was really fun! I remember fluro bike pants being popular in my preschool. 80s movies are the best! Breakfast Club etc!! That was 80s right?
sara- Arn’t cartoons from the 80s and 90s so much better than the ones now- I am so forcing my children to watch 80s cartoons! The fashion in the 80s did leave a lot to be desired. They may say that about 2009 in 30 years though! hehe
Nay- Thank you! It was such a fun night out and while I drank too much it was a fab day- hula hooping at parties is always fun too!!!!
Khea- I like kimutaku (and tsumabuki satoshi- swoon!) but I never really thought of Shun as looking like him- will have to google “change” as I don;t think I know it. I love hula hooping- after your bun is born I will teach you in Tokyo! hehe
Paul- You crack me up with your @exterted peer pressure to eat unhelathily! How about we go by rice crackers in coles instead?? To eat with our wine/coronos! I will have wine- and try to limit myself to two….what I tried to do last time we met up which as you may remember didn’t work. It is a date- we will meet at the Irish Bar in Queen Street in a couple of weeks hey? FB msg me later and we will sort out the details. I wish I was a reformed fatty…..
Tj-in-Japan- I like it too! He hates it though!!!
I was going to go to the opshop to try and find a old prom dress style- the lilac bridesmaids dress does sound fun- pics please! hehe
Jay- I am not much into themed parties myself but this one was good- Fairly relaxed and fun. TMNT ruled in the 80s!!!
Hey lovely! Great blog! And love everyone’s party costumes! Very creative. Those parties are so awesome when everyone participates like that!

You look awesome in your Mum’s wedding dress! The colour totally suits you! You are looking really great in general!
You can tell you have lost weight!
I loved the idea of that 80’s themed party! Oh man it looked like so much fun! I actually remember the Teenage Mutant Ninja turtles too. I hate to admit this but I went to the movies to see their movie, lol!
Mrs. Pacman was one of my favorite games. Care Bears and let’s not forget the Smurf’s either!
LOL. Okay, I am thoroughly embaressed right now. : )
