Things we will miss…
We leave to move back to Japan in 5.5 weeks- this is a good thing. I am excited to be going back- we started packing yesterday and already have six boxes to send and I think we will need another two. It is going to be expensive I think!!!
It got me thinking about the things we will miss from Australia.
Shun will miss
- sausages (in particular sausages on rolls- his first ever was from Bunnings)
- steak (you will notice a trend that most of the things Shun will miss involve meat) & Roast Beef
- Salami
- Been able to stay up all night playing computer games because he didn`t have to work much
- Cous Cous (luckily I can send this to Japan- we have 10 packets ready to go!)
- Abbey
- Simpsons on foxtel
I am sure there other things he will miss too- but most of them are food…lol!
I will miss
- My family & friends
- English speakers
- Abbey
- Steak (yes, I will miss it as well!)
- Going out for dinner- we will do that in Japan too, but at least here I can read the menu
- Cadbury chocolate
- Clothes that fit (& shopping for them!)
- Being close to the ocean
- English books everywhere I look
-Decent toothpaste (luckily I can send that too!)
I am sure there are other things that would be on the list if I took more time- but they are the ones that came to mind first! What do you miss from your home countries? Or what do you think you would miss?

That’s so cute that everything Shun will miss is meat (Tetsu loves his meats as well lol)
You must be excited to come back though, eh? Even though you’ll miss a lot of things. I think either way you always miss something from somewhere, even just a vacation destination! What to do~~~??
I miss my family, being surounded in nature AND city at the same time, sarcasm and friendly strangers, seeing the stars at night, jello pudding, kraft macaroni and cheese, the sea wall, and ice hockey.
=)
Khea- I will miss the stars as well actually!!!
I miss being able to go anywhere I want w/out spending an hour on the internet checking train schedules and routes, then another hour pouring over maps, and even when I don’t know exactly where I’m going, I can still figure it out by reading street signs. I miss streets with names! I don’t miss my fave restaurants as much as I used to, but I really miss being able to shop for clothes and shoes at the mall. I miss walking into a store, and being able to find exactly what I need because I can read the labels!
But it’s easy trade-off, I’ll gladly give up all those things, and more, for the opportunity to live overseas!
I miss being able to go to the doctor and actually understand what they are talking about…
I miss being able to shop for stuff that actually fits…
I miss seeing my nephew and niece grow up…
I miss sausages too!!
I miss the support that you can easily get when your family and friends are close by…
I miss Aussie TV…
I miss going to a library and actually have a variety of books to chose from…
I miss having a HOUSE to live in….
I miss having the chance to own a dog…
I miss being able to chose a DVD at the rental shop because of the story, not because of the pictures…
I could go on and on and on. Luckily I am going ‘home’ in 2 weeks, otherwise I might just sink into ‘I really hate Japan’ mode… I’m sure that I will be glad to come back ‘home’ again though
Coz I don’t really mind living here at all
Half the things I miss are also food, lol.
But aside from the food, I also miss my family. I miss clean air and wide open space. I miss driving. I miss conversations in my native language. I miss parties. I miss diversity. I miss academia (maybe I kind of just miss being in school and learning stuff). I miss proper bookstores. I miss grocery shopping and frozen dinners. I miss watching TV without having to download shows for hours. I miss the beach!
I miss licorice and bbqing nightly (but not bbqing licorice…)
I miss the cafe lifestyle
I miss the beach
I miss not feeling like I am a 10 tonne whale in a pond of minnows…
I miss ads. Is that stupid or what? I think I watch too much internet TV!
Brenda- Street signs is a good one- I will miss street signs too. Properly named and numbered streets! Japans system just seems crazy to me!
Nay- Haha, I go through I hate japan phases too- although since it has been a year since I was there I am in the “I LOVE JAPAN and MISS JAPAN” stage! But I am sure it won`t take long for things to piss me off again! haha! I am so glad I will be seeing you in probably just over a week- how exciting! I will miss having a dog too- Abbey annoys me sometimes but I do love having her around. I hope one day we can both have a house and a dog! Even if it is in Japan!
Jessica- Sadly the majority of stuff I will miss from Australia is food related or language related also! funny that! Grocery shopping is a good one- I will miss that too. It is just not the same in japan because there are too many ingredients that I just can`t get!!!
Heather- I will not miss licorice- I hate licorice. haha! BBQs I will miss although we do bbq a bit in Japan in summer. The cafe lifestyle and the 10 tonne whale comments- totally agree! I will miss been of average size with clothes that fit- I don`t want to go back to being a whale in a pond of minnows!
I will not miss ads! But I might in six months…
I can hook you up with the two C’s….Cadbury’s and Couscous!
Thanks Tigermama- we have the cous cous covered at least until December but I might mail you about the cadbury!
I have been wanting Cadbury for SOOOO long, not just the bars but the variety in general.
I miss GOOD Mexican Food
I miss HUGE washers and Dryers, cause the 9kg that I have (which is the biggest in Japan) still is not cutting it-
I miss the diversity in food.
(Love the clothes here)
I miss REAL nightclubs
I miss friends stopping by for no reason just to say hi, and hang out.
I do make the best out of being here and try not letting the fact that I married a J-Guy inconvenience me. Not so much the guy but the fact that he Lives and works and has a career in Japan. This is one sacrifice I’ve done for love.
Oh mexican food is a good one!!! Although mexican food in Australia is not that great- I do love it!!!
Washing machines and dryers is another good one- although we do not have a dryer in Japan so just the dryer in general is something I will miss!!!!
Like you, I make the most of being in Japan- and I miss it a lot when I am in Australia, but unfortunately there are just some times when you want to go “fuck japan!” – I have not had that feeling in awhile though! Give me six months back in the country! hehe
LOL at what Shun will miss!
Things I miss about Australia:
My family
Good coffee (although I’ve had a few good ones in London lately, but it’s not reliable!)
Mad Fish being in every bottle shop, instead of having to order it specially and have it cost a bomb!
Cadbury chocolate, and Cherry Ripes
Mint Slices
The weather!
Gum trees
Being able to buy cheap shoes that fit – UK mainstream sizes are so much smaller
Decent cheap sushi
Shanghai Dumpling House in Melbourne
Gelato
The beaches
Witchery and Sportsgirl
Just that feeling of knowing exactly where you need to go if you want something, or what to do if something needs to be done…..instead of feeling a bit lost, or having a mountain of paperwork to fill out!
But now Spring has arrived here, the sunshine makes it so much easier….I do love it here, it does really feel like home now.
Wedding countdown!! So excited for you! xxx
Hi Phil, witchery and sportsgirl are two of my favourite shops too!!! I am pretty sure that the coffee in Japan sucks more than England- it is really hard to get good coffee. But I actually grew accustomed to it sadly! Melbourne has such a great cafe culture though and I totally agree that the coffee is better down there- it is all those Europeans!
There is not gelato in the UK? Really? Wow!
What is madfish? Obviously some kind of drink? I have never heard of it!!!
I have loved reading everybodies lists!
LuLu… the things we do for love sometimes! P.S. on the Washer Dryer front… I just wanted to mention the combo front loaders have worked the best at keeping lint, etc at bay, but I tend to hang my clothes (I love the fresh air going through my hair-although I frowned upon it years ago), I honestly rarely use my dryer = )
There is gelato here, but not on every corner like in Melbourne
– and the best ones tend to be miles away from my flat (but that’s probably a good thing!)…like Tom said to me once, icecream shops can’t really operate 12 months of the year here!!!
Hence, cake is my vice here, rather than icecream ;P
Mad Fish is a wine, produced in WA. My favourite!
Besides family and friends there are very few things I miss about the US (I live in Melbourne now)…
but here is what comes to mind off the top of my head:
Rootbeer (and subsequently the Rootbeer float)
The Red Sox – so sad, i actually miss baseball season!
the way the trees turn colour in autumn in New England.
I’m so with you all on the shopping… in my size!! And normal washer and dryers!! Of course, family and friends are on top of the list of things I miss… or so I tell them. I also miss Sundays spent in bars watching football while drinking beer and eating hot wings. I miss seeing the monuments in DC at night from across the Potomac while driving down the parkway. I miss Twizzlers, Skittles and over American sweets so easily found at every convenience store. I miss wine tours with friends in stretch limos. But I love the opportunity to be overseas!
We head to Australia in a few short weeks! We’ll be crossing paths! Happy upcoming wedding to you!
Phil, Girl Japan- Thanks for coming back to comment again- P, Must look out for that wine. My favs at the moment are from NZ! GJ- I am so lazy and if I put the clothes out I tend to forget to bring them in- they do not smell so great after three days. haha- i need to get more domisticated!
Deidre- haha, at least Melbourne kind of has seasons- not like Brisbane! haha, not something I will miss about Brisbane although the weather is usually pretty good.
I have never tried rootbeer- if I ever get to America I promise to give it ago!
Karen- Sweets are things I miss from here, hence the cadbury chocolate. Allens lollies are another! You can get skittles in Australia- are they not the same as the ones in America?
Wine tours with friends in stretch limos- wow! haha- don`t think I have ever seen a limo in Japan?
What date do you fly in? I might be up that way at the same time- we leave for our honeymoon in 3 weeks!!
No, No don’t domesticate yourself darling, I defy domestication but I hang the clothes to reduce the sneezing (the old dryer I had took two hours to dry a load of clothes) but got so used to it I never use the new one.
Domestication is a dirty word for me… lol “wink”
When I was living in Utah I missed little things, like not being stared at when I talked, and people being able to understand what I was saying. I missed the NHS, however imperfect it is, being able to see a doctor or go to the hospital and not pay for the privilege. I missed sausages: just normal, English sausages. And homely things, like red postboxes. And of course at the time I missed being able to drink, but that wouldn’t be the case now. Strangely, I missed rain, too. It didn’t rain a lot in Utah.
I think they are the same… I can’t imagine trying to alter the already perfect Skittle.
The limos back home were often the Hummer ones. I’ve seen a few H2s here and always wonder why in the heck someone would do that! We Americans are just plain stuck on bigger is better.
We fly in on May 7th. I’m mapping out our itinerary now! Cannot wait!
Oh I love this question.
I miss the food, I miss my family the most.
But other stuff, I miss Target. Pushing that great big red cart throughout the store. LOL, cool finds to be had in there. I think you guys have that store too, right? : )
I miss English conversation in general like with the grocery store lady, just the “how are you today” type stuff. Talking with the neighbors.
