Sarujima…
Summer in Japan to me usually means BBQs, camping, festivals, fireworks, the beach (no matter if it has black sand!), Kakigori (snowcones) and unbearable heat.
On the weekend Shun & I went to Sarujima with friends to BBQ and hang out at the beach. Sarujima is a small uninhabited island off the coast (literally only like 1km off the coast) of Yokosuka in Kanagawa-ken. It certainly wasn`t uninhabited on Saturday when we were there though- there was probably close to 1000 people or more on the little beach area that we could BBQ on. I have no idea why it is called sarujima (monkey island?) since there was no monkeys and despite what my friend James said it was not “shaped like a monkey”. (Sadly, I was gullible enough to believe him when I said this- I have known James long enough to know better!)
It was such a fun day. We caught the 11:30am boat to the island and the 4:30pm boat back.
Here are a couple photos from the day…
Shun became the BBQer- Gary & James joined in!

It was a cloudy day but still hot enough to paddle

James & I taking a break! We forgot to bring the picnic sheet but lucky most of us had brought towels we could lay down.

No summer day would be complete without kakigori

We went on a bit of a hike around the island

Koki (in grey singlet) is a photographer- he set us up for a timed photo of all of us near the caves. He called it an “album shot”- On my camera we used no flash and I love that this one catches Uchi (Striped shirt) in mid motion.

Looks like such a fun trip. Anywhere there is water in this heat is nice. I love kakigori too, one of the best things about summer!
Sounds like you had a great day!! BBQ’s, camping and the beach also cry out ’summer’ to me as well. Nothing can beat a really yummy kakigori on a hot summer day!! I’m thinking about getting my own kakigori maker actually…
The last couple of group photos are great!! The self timer function on cameras are so handy. We use it alot because normally it is only ever the two of us…
Looks like a great day. I thought the “album cover” shots were very funky when I saw them on FB. Love the kilt towel as well- very cool!
What a fun day! And I have to say that I love your dress. I`m guessing you got it in OZ and therefore I have no hope of finding one here….
wonderful pictures!! looks like you all had a lot of fun!
Looks like you had found. The name intrigued me to see if I can figure out why it was chosen. Just did a quick wiki search and saw a picture (no resemblance to a monkey there, at least not to me). Japanese site didn`t really have anything on the name. Oh well, would have been interesting to see why they chose Monkey
Looks fun, I can’t wait to get to the beach this weekend, although I still crave the white powdery Aussie sand!
I love your dress too, very summer pregnant floaty like!
That sums up Summer for me too!!! But river instead of beach, since it’s next to us.
Gotta love it. Glad you had fun, I can tell from the pictures! You all look great too~~~
Sounds like fun, great pictures! Maybe there used to be monkeys on the island a long time ago but humans ran them off? I guess it will remain a mystery.
I absolutely love those group photos. Looks like an Abercrombie and Fitch CM.
