Almost 19 weeks…
I had a doctors appointment today and while I did get a little print out, all I can see is the head so I thought I would share the DVD they gave me instead. If it looks as if they are prodding goma-chan and moving the echo thing around a lot it is because they are- the doctor was trying to find out the sex but goma-chan was not being very cooperative and the doctor left me with a “zannen” (“that is too bad”) comment and gave me a DVD. I think I got a DVD because they thought they would be able to figure out the sex. Oh well, I figured that I wouldn`t find out this time anyway but here is hoping goma-chan is more cooperative in three weeks when I go back.
Oh I am feeling actual kicks now too- weird, but it started today after the echo/scan. I think goma-chan likes train rides (or hates them) as that is when he is most active. You can`t feel them from the outside yet though so Shun will have nothing to feel when he gets home but maybe in a couple of weeks.
Goma-chan was genki and measuring fairly close to average size (although the head is bigger than 19 weeks- bit scary!). One of the best things about the appointment is that I actually lost weight- I have no idea how this has happened. I spoke to my mum about it and she asked if I was eating more than normal and the truth is I haven`t been- I am not more hungry than usual or anything so I guess that is having something to do with it maybe? I guess I walk a fair bit too (and they heat means that while the walking is not that fast I am still burning calories) and have started doing a bit of maternity yoga (but want to get into it more after I move). Weight wise goma-chan was smack bang in the middle of average and the measure your stomach when you go and that was definitely bigger but I had actually lost 500g (I know, I know it is not much but hey I was thinking a 1.5-2kg weight GAIN). So I guess those magic scales a couple of weeks ago were not so magic afterall, and actually quite close to the truth. So at least the doctor could not have a go at me about being fat! Although I am sure he thinks I already was….but oh well, he still can`t say anything! Blood pressure was normal (116/59 or something like that) and I paid all the money without any issues. Plus because there was no blood test today it only cost me 340yen! Bargain!

Kawaiiiiiiii! Oh Lulu, what a great little show! Since Goma-chan was being stubborn and uncooperative, he’s probably a boy! LOL How was your pulled stomache muscle? Did the dr. need to check it out?
Wow! You actually LOST weight? That’s incredible! No weird cravings yet?
Glad things are going so well, maternity yoga is awesome, definitely get in to it! After Goma-chan gets here, Mommy & Me yoga is great too.
very genki goma chan you have there!
Wow, can’t believe you’re so far along already! That’s going to be such a neat keepsake. I never got any DVDs… hmph. Too bad about the sex, hopefully next time! Even though I found out at 18 weeks… I never felt 100% sure (and neither did the Dr) so it didn’t matter anyways lol
Glad everything is going so well! I know what you mean about not feeling especially hungry. I never did. Second trimester was very blah.. but the third!!! I could eat the plates as well hehe.
Oh, that’s so cute, I can see arms and knees and lots of kicking! Maybe you just realized after you saw that, that those funny feelings ARE kicks! (before that, they just feel like wind).
What fun! Never mind, you have tons of time to see if goma is a boy or a girl. And PLEASE don’t worry about the size estimates – we big gaijin women have bigger babies and that’s okay! It’s never completely accurate anyway, so feel free to err on the side of whatever feels best for you!
wow. They gave you that? And you still only paid 340 yen?? Is your doctor the back room of a laundromat or something? ;P
Amy flat refused to show us her (lack of) bits for the full 40 weeks. And she’s still just as stubborn about everything so watch out for the uncooperative ones- start doing yoga and zen meditation and deep breathing exercises now!
Yay!! So cool that they gave you a DVD!! Guess you should be getting all that good service since you paid so much upfront.
Can you give me some of those magic scales.. I have an appt tomorrow and I KNOW I will show a weight gain and I just don’t want to see it
Thats so exciting you can feel proper kicks!! BG was actually very calm on the train – and she likes the car as well.. maybe you have a densha otoko uh oh!!! Hahah don’t worry with you and Shun as parents I’m sure he/she will be fine
good luck for your move tomorrow!
Brenda- Thank you! The pulled stomach muscle felt better today- I still have a sore back but it is much better to. By weird cravings do you mean wanting to eat icecream covered in fish flakes? Then nope, no weird cravings! I had a craving for chocolate ( not so weird) since Monday but held out until today when I picked some up on the way home- then I got home, ate a row and was like “meh, thats enough”
What is mummy and me yoga? I have seen “doga” dog and me yoga…
Illahee- That is always what the doctor says too- “genki da ne” EVERYTIME! Both drs say goma is very genki. I guess some babies don`t move much? Apparently goma doesn`t stop.
Khea- When did you start to feel sure that Ponyo was a girl? I really really want to know now that they couldn`t tell me. Haha! I still think boy, but it would be good to know so that I can start buying stuff that is not neccessarily gender neutral. I know I will have time after goma is born but my mum in Australia is hanging out to find out too as she wants to knit something pink or blue (she already made a gender neutral blanket!)
Haha, about the plates! I am eating normally but no more or less than usual really.
Rachel- Oh I felt what felt like bubbles up until today and then absolutely nothing yesterday but then today after the “echo” the baby started going nuts. I think it is cos the doctor tried to get him or her into a better position and maybe he wasn`t so impressed. He/she probably hates me too now as I have been poking at my belly most of the day trying to get movement!
Oh the size measurements were kind of all over the place anyway- like circumfereance of head was small but then another measurement of the head was big or something. I figure it isnot an exact science and goma-chan is going to come when he/she wants to anyway so no use stressing too much. Although you have to admit a giant head is a bit of a worry!
Heather- Apparently I get one (or two, I kind of missed what the lady was saying) dvd`s complimentary. I think it might be two, as at the end they asked me to bring the DVD next time. Or maybe that is only because they didnt end up finding out the sex so they will add another one to the current one next time (It actually opens to a screen first were I can click today`s DVD). I handed my boshi techo ken thing over at the beggining which is why it was so cheap I think? I am not sure. Trust me though, while the outside of the place looks like a love hotel (Seriously!) it is actually really nice inside!
Please do not say that about Amy! I am scared now they won`t be able to tell me the sex!!! Did they really have no clue? Or did they suspect girl but couldn`t confirm?
Not until the THIRD scan that he said it was a girl. The first two times it was “probably a girl” which just had me doubting… every time since though, it’s been girl so *crosses fingers* I think if it’s a boy though it’s closer to 100%… you can hide “things” but you can’t fake having them lol
Hopefully next time!
(That’s still so cool about the DVD though)
Hey?! Did you miss my comment?
Am i being caught in your spam
Khea- I am hoping that goma-chan will cooperate and show his or her “bits” next time- I get the feeling if they say boy then it is pretty close to 100% been a boy it is when they say girl early on that later on they can go “whoops, there it is, we were wrong!” – you are far enough along now though that there is no chance of a turtle popping out I think. In America and Australia they do a lot less scans so if they say girl and it turns out the be a boy it is usually because the person had no other scan after the gender scan but in Japan they do so many that I think they are like 99.9% sure by birth.
Next time you go to drs just take your own camera and video the scan? Then you can have a mini dvd!!! Or maybe take a blank dvd and they can make you one? I don`t know? Hopefully I will get some 3D pictures next time I hope as well as finding out the sex!
Sara- Sorry I saved your comment from spam! Haha, yes I am sure the 430.000yen I paid today helped in giving me the DVD, at least a little!!! LOL
I am not sure- shun is a bit of an otaku so he could end up being a densha otoko….scary thought.
Thanks for the luck with the move- good luck at your drs, I hope the scales surprise you!
I think Goma-chan looks like a boy, and I agree with the stubborn thing too! Wow, that is a bargain, we paid like 7000 yen each time, although they knew we were giving birth in Aussie and didn’t have any big payments coming so I guess they had to milk us for all they could!
Good luck moving this weekend!
So cute. How is the pregnancy yoga going? Seriously- it has come in handy the first and third pregnancy.
Lulu,
It’s been such a long time since I stopped by your blog – CONGRATULATIONS!!! How exciting, I am thrilled for you both. Love the DVD. Will check back more regularly and satiate my cluckiness via you
Jus
Wow. Congratulations! I wish you the best.
Yay! What fun to see the little bean moving around right? Our doctor couldn’t tell us the baby’s gender at 20 weeks and as you may know, ultrasounds are much less frequent in the U.S. so we didn’t have another one (and a shot at figuring out the gender) until almost 38 weeks along. By then we had decided we could wait a few more weeks to be surprised. The fun of the big reveal, whenever it happens, is really priceless!
Glad to hear you had such a great appt.!
