Notes to goma-chan…
Inspired by Nay`s fab news that she finally announced today! I loved her little letters to baby N (or “little cow” as she called him/her in the comments to her sister- LOVE IT!)
So in honour of Nay`s good news and my recent doctors appointment for 28 weeks here is a little letter (Okay it turned into a long letter- I wonder if Goma-chan will be a “chatter” like his Mama) to Goma-chan.
Dear Goma-chan,
I have known for awhile that you would have another friend to play with come April but Auntie Nay could finally announce it on her blog today so it is a reason to celebrate and the reason why I am writing a letter to you!!! Daddy & I could not be happier for Nay and Naoki and I know you are stoked too even if you can`t tell me yet!! It will soon be time to place bets on whether Nay`s little beanie baby will be a boy or a girl- in fact she will probably be able to find out around the time that you arrive on the scene in December.
I will have to track down a copy of the letter I wrote to Sarah`s baby, Sakura, when she was born about how the three of us met one day. It will be good for you to know where mummies lovely friends came from! Interestin fact: There is five months or so age difference between you, Sakura and Nay`s little one!
You are getting more and more active now and my belly is STILL growing and I guess all your growing is pushing my belly button out. I now have a half inny/half outy belly button and basically it just looks freaky.
On Friday I went to the doctors for another scan and check-up and all was going well. Mama put on no weight (YAY!) and you gained 200grams. How they can tell this I am not really sure (your weight gain I mean) but hey the good thing is you are growing! We tried yet again to get a 3D scan of your face but your hands and umbilical cord were in the way- I have a beautiful shot of your mouth and chin though but it was a “no show” of the eyes/nose or forehead. Doctor did mention though that you had hair from what he could see.
Your umbilical cord is up and around the back of your head- at this stage the doctor said we do not need to worry about this but seeing it like that sure makes mama worry. Hopefully next time I go in the umbilical cord will be well out of the way! The doctor mentioned if it was to go around again it would not be a problem just that we would need to monitor your heartbeat on a more regular basis to make sure you don`t go into distress.
We are pretty much prepared for your arrival (I think!)- with almost all of your things set up and ready to go. I have even washed most of your clothes in anticipation which is a shock considering how much I usually hate housework.
Your name is still not decided- we continuously go back to the same two or three names though but I think we will be waiting until we see your face before deciding for sure. For now you are known only as “Goma” or “Goma-chan” and I am beginning to think that this name might even stick around after your birth. I was “Lulu” from a young age and my brother was “boofhead” and so I guess “Goma-chan” is somewhere in between those two as a decent nickname. Aussie Grandma calls you seasame!
We are visiting with Baba and Jiji today- Last night we had dinner with uncle Taka and auntie Kazumi as well as with Hibaba. You will meet them soon after you enter the world in December.
This week you haven`t given me much heartburn yet and for that I am grateful- we are staying another night here and I only have ONE mylanta left in my bag. Hopefully I won`t need it. I mentioned before that you are VERY active- so active in fact that you can see my belly moving around underneath my clothes, kind of like a mini earthquake. When Daddy sees it he says “Kimochi warui” but don`t worry he doesn`t mean it! He loves you a lot already and talks at you all the time- strangely enough in English. Maybe he thinks you don`t understand Japanese??? Most of the time your kicking or moving doesn`t hurt BUT very occasionly you will give me a swift kick or punch near my ribs or lower down and I think it is just you telling me you are still there and genki or it could be the start of a rebellious streak already. Only time will tell!!!
Well Goma-chan, Mama better go. We are excited to meet you in less than 3 months, stay genki until then.
Love Mama

So sweet. And he has hair?Wow! Neither of mine did and the little one still doesn’t;)
Good luck with the names;would love to hear them but know that it is such a personal thing so shall wait with great anticipation.
Very excited as your time grows closer:)
awww, I love your letter to goma chan!! It’s a nice way to write out what you are feeling and thinking in relation to the baby, isn’t it! And just imagine when the time comes and they can actually read it. I’m sure they will treasure it!!
It’s really not that long now till you get to meet your little boy!! I am so excited for you and Shun!!
Such a sweet letter and I’m sure goma-chan will enjoy reading it in the future. So great that your kids will all be close together. My BF here has kids the same age as mine and it gives us so much to chat about (like we need more but…). Oh and Ryohei wants to know why Sara has so many Aussie friends. I said it was just good taste… ;P
Nice!! None of my three got nice letters from mummy and they never will until they can sleep through the night without peeing their pants. Boofhead
Just as long as don’t feel the need to continue on and give goma-chan a family name, although I’m sure you’re brother would be stoked.
Hope you’re still in the market for the baby bath – which is sitting in Marina’s room slowly filling with clothes!
awww! this was so sweet, I almost cried! I’m sure you are going through such a special and happy time waiting for your first baby, and I’m thankful you can share it with us blog readers
Sigh, if only I was ready for babies… your excitement is infectious
Anyway, I also wanted to comment to let you know that I’m back here in Funabashi, so if you’d like to push our schedule books together to figure out when we may be able to meet up, let me know. I think it will be a lot of fun! I guess at this point, consider me booked until Saturday, and then from that point until next Thursday (the 1st) I’m pretty open and free. I’ll send you and email after this with my contact info.
Cute letter, hair? Wow, your Drs office must have a really good ultrasound, we have trouble even making out where the face is let alone fetails such as hair. If she is anything like me she is going to be more or less bald for the first year of life. While her umblical cord isn`t at the back of her head she does always seem to be hugging it whenever we get ultrasounds done.
Cute letter! You know, we actually also call our baby (the unborn one) “little cow” in Chinese, “xiao niu,” he/she got the nickname because it is the year of the cow (or ox or buffalo orwhatever … the word is the same in Chinese, lol). DS is called “xiao zhu,” which means “little pig,” which is his zodiac sign. It is pretty sad, but I don’t think DS even knows his real name yet and he’s almost 2!
Don’t worry about the umbilical cord too much. DS had his around his neck from about 35 weeks onward and was born that way. It is actually really common. You just don’t want the cord coming out before the baby when it is born, but you have a long time and he’s still got quite a bit of room to move about some I’m sure it’ll be fine.
28 weeks Lulu! Won’t be long now!
Awww, that is the cutest letter! I especially loved the part about Shun talking to the baby in English!! I can’t wait to meet the little one next year sometime…when you have the appropriate slot for MORE visitors. Mind you, you seem to be quite the sublime hostess! xxx
Mandy, great to hear from you. Sent you a message on FB. Although you are probably on a plane back to Brisbane now.
Thanks for commenting- looking forward to hearing how you settle back in Brisbane after so much time away. Hard to believe it has been more than 2 years since you were on your way to Europe via Tokyo.
I do not know why Shun speaks to the baby in English- frankly it is a little weird.
Jessica- Oh I am glad that the umbilical cord thing is normal- I tried googling but that is not always the best idea.
That is so cute that Dylan does not know his own name- I do not think I knew my real name til I started school though either since I was always Lulu at home and around friends. Nay`s surname in Japanese has the word “cow” in it which is where the idea for her nickname came from- I guess my baby is a “little cow” too since it will also be born in the year of the cow. So was I for that matter!
Melanie- Yeah- I was surprised they could see hair as well. But the doctor mentioned it although I can not really make anything out when I looked at the DVD again. They are still giving us a DVD everytime which is great as I can not wait to watch them with goma-chan when he gets older.
I had a lot of hair when I was born so maybe he is taking after me in that retrospect?
Thanks Elizabeth! I am going to have to print out the letter I think and put it in Goma-chan`s book (like a baby record book) – I have been pretty slack about writing things in there but it does have a lot of post-its stuck in the front like the first time I felt him and the first time Shun felt him etc. The DVDs will be added to the book too.
I bought the book before we knew if he was a boy or a girl but I was so sure that he would be a boy that I bought the blue one anyway- not that blue is bad for girls!
Gaijinwife- Goma-chan might not get any nice letters after birth- they might all read ” Dear Goma-chan, please sleep for more than 2 hours straight so that mama can get her MUCH needed beauty sleep. Would also be helpful if you stopped peeing your pants and yelling at me. Thanks, mama”
Still in the market for the baby bath! I have a list of baby stuff we still need to get (pretty much set though!) and next to baby bath I have your initials! So yes, please send it our way!
I will need to print it out for Goma-chan I think Heather. I only wrote it up on the computer although he has a couple of other letters in my journal- I will eventually have to photocopy them for his book.
I am so grateful that I have friends who will have kids of similar ages- even though we are far away in terms of distance, we are still brought closer by our friendship. Plus we try to meet up whenever we can. Hope you have enjoyed having S, S & R at your place.
I have told Ryohei before- Aussie`s rule. He needs to get used to it
Nay- The letter was inspired by you babe- definitely a nice way to communicate with the bub I say.
I can not believe that we will be meeting Goma-chan in less than 3 months- even if I go a week overdue he will still be here by this time in December. Will be a great Christmas present I think!
Thanks Ilahee! I can not wait to meet him either
I can not believe it is getting to be so close!
Marianne- Apparently he has hair- I am not so sure. Would be nice if he came out with some though! hehe. I am surprised they can see it on an ultrasound but the doctor seemed pretty sure and I guess he would know. Maybe the machines at my clinic are really good or something? He mentioned it when it was on the 3D function.
Your little one has some hair! It is just very fair- I think Goma-chan`s first lot of hair will be dark but will then fall out and come in lighter maybe. Mine all fell out after I was born and grew back blond- I didn`t go brown til I was in school!
Okay replying to all comments in the wordpress thing did NOT work for me. UH OH!
That is so sweet and a great idea! When I have children I’ll have to steal this idea from you and Nay. Congrats to both of you and goma-chan will be a great Christmas present
