34 weeks…

34 weeks today.

Goma-chan should be making his appearance into the world in about six weeks give or take a couple of days – or he could still arrive early but I am not sure!

I had a doctor`s appointment on Friday and they were happy with things and said the baby looked really healthy and was about 2.2kg already and that I should just continue to take the medication to prevent pre-term labour for another 2 weeks and continue to take it easy. It was a relief that all was okay and that Goma-chan was looking good.

Goma-chan might still make an early appearance but he is a good size and his lungs would be pretty much full developed by now so if I went into labour, even in the next week, things would probably be all good. I still get fairly frequent braxton hicks contractions, some of which hurt, but nothing really regular anymore so I think the medicine is doing its job. It tends to get worse if I am trying to carry something or if I am walking too much so I guess that is why the doctor tells me to rest! (Resting is still so boring though!)

The ultrasound on Friday showed the babies face a bit but he moved again before the doctor could switch to 3D/4D scan- but you can see it on the ultrasound a little although in a 2D scan it does make him look a little weird. Shun is worried that he has a nose that looks like a pig ( I told him not to say such horrible things!) but I think it is just because in that frame it is showing the skeletal structure more than his ACTUAL nose (at least we hope so! hehe) – he opened his mouth a couple of times and stuck out his tongue according to the doctor.

Here is the video

And here is the EVER growing bump
Bump 34 weeks

And also a shot of a present that arrived in the mail for young Goma from my Auntie Gayle in Australia. She is not my “official” auntie but has been known as auntie Gayle my whole life. She is a very good friend of my mum`s and her daughter Meghan is my godmother. It was a huge surprise to get this in the mail as I had no prior warning- some lovely blankets for Goma-chan and some singlets and socks. All very practical stuff which is great! I love the bigger blanket and will probably use it as a play blanket to lay on our rug in the living room. It was so warm and fluffy.

So the bump is still growing- and I gained 2kg in 2 weeks which made the doctor say in English “you got too fat” and I said ” yeah, but you told me to take it easy and up until I was 32 weeks I was walking every day and fairly active so I am not surprised I put on 2kg” (I said that in Japanese) and his response was “Don`t eat”- again in English. I laughed at him and told him in English “you are silly” (which he did not really know what to do about- I doubt ANY patient has ever told him he is silly and laughed at him before especially with the mentality in Japan that doctors know EVERYTHING and are like god`s gift to the world) and he switched back to Japanese and said I need to keep calorie intake down since I am not supposed to do exercise or walking or anything but I am not too concerned and if I am hungry I am going to eat- this is the first time since I have gone to this clinic that they have ever mentioned my weight and he did say that it is not too much to worry about since I had not gained too much up until this point. While it was a lot of weight to gain in a short amount of time it still puts me at only 9kg gained since getting pregnant and these next two weeks I will try not to eat too much junk and maybe get out to do some short walks as long as I am feeling well.

I am not sure how well I am feeling though since I have had a sore throat since yesterday which got worse overnight and brought with it a bit of a stuffy nose and by tonight my body is aching. So far no fever but it started at 36.6 earlier today and is now at 37.2 so I will take it again in the morning to make sure. I do not feel feverish though but with the flu going around and everything I can not be too careful. Hopefully it is just a cold. Does anyone know anything about fevers though if you have had your tonsils out? For some reason Shun`s mum told me that I can`t get a fever because I have no tonsils- and when I thought about it I don`t really ever remember having much of a fever above 37.5 before so maybe there is some truth in that. Does anyone know? The sore throat sure reminds me of the many many times I had tonsilitis as a kid though (had my tonsils out when I was 9 after 5 years of having a bout of tonsilitis every week and waking up with sore throats EVERY DAY)…Hopefully I do not get a temperature because if I do then I am guessing I may have the flu, which would suck. We thought about going to the doctor`s today since Shun could come with me but without a fever I doubt there is much they would/could do and I didn`t really want to go somewhere that might have people that have the flu, even with a mask.

All else seems to be going okay with the pregnancy. I do not get much heartburn anymore since the baby is quite low down. He is still pretty active but now it is usually only his arms/legs kicking or punching me instead of whole body movements since he is already head down. I am not loving the having to pee every 5 minutes (sometimes literally I go twice in ten minutes!) thing but it is not too bad. So apart from the pre-term labour thing and the possible cold/flu all is good.

I have no real idea about fever if you’ve had your tonsils out, but I’ve never heard that before. I’m certainly not a medical professional, but I thought a fever was a reaction to an infection in your body– and the tonsils are just a part of your lymphatic system, not the whole thing, so there’s still stuff in your body to fight infection, so I can’t see why you *couldn’t* get a fever. Maybe just keep an eye on it, and if it’s there in the morning go to the Dr? Maybe you could even be more susceptible to it, since a pretty big part of the lymphatic system was taken out, so there’s less to fight infection? I really have no idea, but I’m curious now!

I’m always amazed at how much babies look like their scans once they’re born, but I’m sure Goma-chan doesn’t have a pig nose!

Yay you’re getting closer! So exciting. :)
That dark-blue top you’ve got on is very cute! Did you buy it at UNIQLO? It looks like something they would sell.

I’ve never heard the “you can`t get a fever because if you have no tonsils” bit. I still have my tonsils, so I wouldn’t know from experience! Hehe. That’s an interesting rumor though.

I don’t look forward to the “having to pee every 5 minutes” ordeal when I get pregnant in the future, since as of right now – I seem to use the bathroom a lot already (because I like drinking a lot of tea and coffee! oops).

Hope you stay healthy and happy! Best wishes. <3

you can get a fever if you’ve had your tonsils out. i had mine out at five, and have had plenty of fevers since then. esp. when i had the flu (about 20 years ago, wow!), that was pretty high. tonsils (as i understand it) are supposed to get infected and are a way of helping the lymph system (as it’s a part of the system) to fight infections in our bodies. i don’t think it’s what causes fever.

hm, having written that out makes me want to consult dr. google! LOL or maybe WebMD. but i don’t think that not having tonsils means no fevers.

at any rate, hope you’re not sick with the flu!! and good news about goma-chan, i can hardly wait to ‘meet’ him!!

You can definitely still get a fever if you’ve had your tonsils out…another piece of Japanese “wisdom” there ;) But still, hope you don’t get sick though!

Congrats on making it to the 34 weeks mark – the medicine must be working! I love that you said that to the doctor too :)

You look fantastic, Lulu! I love that top too! Don’t worry about what the doctor said! I would have laughed at him too! Of course you would gain weight if you weren’t doing any excersise! What a gorgeous baby blanket! Such a lovely gift to receive!

cute bump!! good to hear that things are settled with the pre-term labour issues and the meds are working. Hope the sniffles and sore throat are nothing to worry about – I have had same too, but think it is just a cold, and change in weather bringing it on. Take care!

Definitely hold off on going to the doctor until you’re pretty sure you’ve got the flu and not just a normal cold. There’s a lot more sickness floating around at the clinic than there is anywhere else and you’re probably better off just resting at home unless you spike a high fever (I am pretty sure you can still get a fever without tonsils) or start having trouble breathing.

I love your response to the doctor, that’s the right attitude! I have gained about the same amount as you this pregnancy and I’m pretty proud of how well I’ve done. I think I also put on about 2kg between 31 and 33 weeks, but then I went back on Friday at 35 weeks and had only put on .6kg, so maybe there is a growth spurt somewhere around 32-33 weeks for the baby too? Do you have to start doing weekly appointments yet? I have to start now, I’m 36 weeks as of tomorrow! Yikes!

Your bump looks like it has grown since last time I saw you – I seriously didn’t think it was possible!! I agree with Laura, it is a very pretty shirt!!

Glad to hear that the medicine you are taking is working to prevent pre-term labour but I am sure it was a relief to know that goma chan is big enough and healthy enough to born early if that’s what ends up happening. Can’t believe he is going to be here soon!! I am so excited for you and Shun!!

I hope you start feeling better soon!

Nice bump! Not long to go now hey! You must be feeling very excited. I hope goma chan decides to stay in for a few weeks but as you said he will be fine anyway. Enjoy your last few weeks of freedom ;-)

Fingers crossed on the cold not being flu — I am confident you will fight it off overnight tho, and wake up tomorrow feeling fine. I’m with the commenters above, pretty sure you can still get a fever without your tonsils, a fever is just your body trying to burn off an infection. And you’re right, that doctor was silly — of course you would put on weight if you are to do nothing but rest, and I don’t think starving yourself will do you or Goma-chan any favours.
    Pfft, doctors.

Ohhh I come back to fun Goma-chan Dvd!!!!!
Don’t worry about his nose too much – I remember freaking out about Sakura but she was fine in the end and quite cute if I may say so myself!!!

I can’t believe your bump!!!! Its awesome you should be proud… can’t believe they will be taking you off the meds in 2 weeks!! Goma-chan could be here before the end of the month!!

Silly Dr. indeed. I gained twice what you have… You are totally fine for Aussie/US standards! I know the resting is boring but just think in only a couple weeks you will have a BABY!?!!?!
