Kicking in…

  • The medicine that Shun went and got from my maternity clinic on Saturday afternoon is finally kicking in and my cough is not as bad as it was. Hopefully I will continue to improve- I felt so much better today. Better than I have felt in over a week…Hopefully the medicine is clearing up the chest infection! Thanks to everyone for advice on the post “feeling sicker…” – Shun rang my clinic and they said he could just come in and pick up the medicine and that he should just leave me at home so that is what he did.
  • On Saturday we also got some GREAT news. My SIL (married to Shun`s older brother) has just found out she is pregnant with her first baby. I am under the impression they have been trying for awhile so it was great to hear this news- still early days yet for them but fingers crossed that all goes well. I am so happy that Goma-chan will have a cousin close in age because there is no way my brother is going to be having kids any time soon.
  • I went and had lunch with my friend Zoe and her little boy Hunter today- we just met in Funabashi and had lunch at Tobu department store before enjoying a very yummy dessert on a cafe also in the Tobu department store. We only catch up about once a month but we always have a lot of fun- this might be the last time I see her and Hunter though before Goma-chan arrives. I told Hunter (2.5 years) that next time the baby will be out of my tummy and that he can give it a real hug. He likes to pat my belly and say “baby, baby, baby”…
  • Last week I pieced together the quilt I am making for Goma-chan- tomorrow or Wednesday I hope to add the backing and middle part and quilt it all together on the machine- it is not the best quilt ever made but I am proud of my efforts so far (even if some patches are out of line!)…The quality of the photo is not great since I took it with my phone.

Quilt for Goma-chan

  • I had a long chat with my brother yesterday and also spoke with my mum a couple of times over the weekend and my dad once. My brother has finished his degree now after handing in his thesis a couple of weeks back and completing his last exam on Tuesday- he will have his graduation ceremony in December but he is technically a fully qualified civil engineer now. He has been working for a major construction company already for over a year though and is set to stay with them for awhile yet but was happy to tell me he now earns the wage of a graduate so that was nice to hear.
  • There will be a password protected post coming up on my blog soon- It has been ages since I did one (not since I was in Australia maybe?) so if you have lost the password and/or think you should have it then you can contact me via my “contact me” section of my blog. Reminder to those that have it- please do not share it with others, instead direct them to contact me if necessary. I don`t password protect posts very often but I would still like to limit who has access when I do.
  • Now that the weather is cooling down I want to make some soup- I am thinking of making a potato and leek soup sometime in the next week but always looking for other recipes. I have never actually made a soup before I don`t think but hopefully it will be a success. It is a little hard since Shun doesn`t like pumpkin much (and I do not like pumpkin soup that much anyway) and I don`t like carrot so a lot of the more popular soups are out. I am thinking of trying a mushroom and spinach soup but would have to hunt down a recipe or alter an existing one that I can find. Does anyone know the rule of thumb for freezing soups? Is their certain soups you can`t freeze? I thought if I made big enough batches then maybe I could freeze the extra for when after the bub arrives. I am also thinking I should make a lasagne and/or casserole that can be frozen so that I don`t have to worry too much about cooking when I leave the hospital. It will be fine if Goma-chan arrives on time or a little late because my mum will be coming soon after (and will be happy to prepare food I am sure!) I leave the hospital but if he does arrive early then I will still have to make dinners for us…(MIL will bring around some food and groceries though- she has already said she would and has told me that if bub comes early and I want to go stay with them after I leave the hospital it is fine but I am probably going to stay at home in Funabashi)
  • I have a English conversation lesson tomorrow. One that I do monthly with a lady living a couple of stations away- It might be the last one I do before the baby comes- I wish I had more students. I am really going to have to get stuck into finding more private students when Goma-chan is about 3 months old or so. I would not mind if they come to our house or if I went to them (as long as they don`t mind me bringing the baby if it is during the week). I miss working. Even if I only had 4-5 students a week I would be happy with that (and financially it would help us save more each month!) and I actually like teaching privately, especially English free conversation or to children (teaching adults who have very basic English though can be a bit hard/frustrating sometimes but I would do that as well!). When I did relief teaching in August for a company that deals in private lessons for children I really enjoyed planning the lessons and meeting with the kids even though I was only seeing them a couple of times before their regular teachers came back- I would work for this company again too probably but I could only work weekends for them since I doubt I could take Goma-chan along with me to the lessons. HAHA. I was even thinking that the city hall might know of a place looking for someone to do community lessons once a week or lessons at a local yochien or hoikuen. Hopefully I will be able to find something.
  • Now that I am nearing the end of my pregnancy it is finally okay to drink herbal tea again and it is great that it is getting cooler around the same time. Shun has been asking me for a couple of weeks to buy a “tea pot” – A Japanese style one that you put the tea leaves in the metal netted case thing (what is this called?) and add hot water and let sit for a bit. I finally bought one today so now he can make hot green tea when he wants it since I stopped by the supermarket as well to get some green tea leaves. Me, I quite like to have apple tea or raspberry leaf tea!
  • November is national blog posting month (Nablopomo) and I am trying my best to post every day for the month of November but I not sure I will be able to continue for the whole month but I had forgotten how addictive it can get.

Goma chan is so lucky, what a lovely quilt!! :)
Glad you can finally have some tea… not sure if I could cope without tea as long as you have!
That soup sounds yum, I hope you have time to post a recipe :)
Good luck with the teaching, I’m sure it will all work out :) )

Glad you are starting to feel better and your clinic was so helpful. I will keep your SIL in my thoughts as I have known quite a few people who have been in that situation and having a cousin around the same age would be great.

The quilt is adorable! You should be proud of yourself :)

I have a few soup recipes, one is a creamy broccoli (though it does have some carrot but I bet you could just leave it out) and a tomato soup with orzo which I haven’t made yet. One place I have found many recipes is tastespotting.com. Its basically where people post their food blogs and you can see all the yummy looking pictures. You can do a search of what you are looking for such as soups, etc.

Is there someplace that people post that they are looking for english lessons or a service that could perhaps set you up with clients? Sorry if it’s a stupid question, I’m not familiar with how things work in Japan :)

I wish I could drink tea but I just can’t get over the taste, still haven’t found one I truly like yet. Apple tea sounds yummy!

glad to hear you are feeling better – i can’t imagine how yucky it must have been to be sick and 35 weeks pregnant… being 35 weeks pregnant is tough enough lol

congrats to your BIL and SIL! thats great!! I was pretty excited about Sakura’s little cousin as well since same as you my brothers won’t be procreating for a long long time

your quilt looks totally cute too!! really looking forward to seeing you in less than a month now! i need to get my shinkansen tickets… wonder if goma-chan will be in or out by then!

That quilt is great. Goma-chan is so lucky. The only handmade things any of my kids have is the ribbon blanket from you and a knitted jersey from Ireland!! Oh, and a pink crochet vest thing from Granny K. Lovely it is.

Ditto on the pumpkin thing – although I do like it. Hub will eat it at a push. I will be interested to read the freezing soup comments if you get any.

Please send me your password – I don’t think I remember it. I thought about password protecting but I have a few people to talk to and email so I think will be OK ;-) Things on the up now anyway – hopefully. Fingers and all bits crossed.

Pat the bump. Must be a nice big bump to pat now.

Good the meds are working, what a relief! I can’t imagine preparing for labour with a cold that won’t go away AND a chest infection, eep! What a stellar husband you have, going to the clinic to get the meds for you ;)

Good luck to your sister in law! How exciting for her! Just like Sarah (except not quite as close in age)… I don’t think ANYONE in my family, not even my cousins will have kids anytime soon, poor Missha. Fingers crossed for Tetsu’s older sister who also got married last year!

Hope you are finding settling into the cold after 3? continuous summers? alright! Haha I love a hot cup of tea in the evenings too (vanilla or mint for me) I’ll let you know when I’m free next, not sure because of anniversary, visa and canada prep but hopefully I can go out and see you before we leave ><

    Take care

I am so glad that the medicine is working and you are starting to feel better. I remember when I had my chest infection last year – it was awful – even the medicine from the doctor wasn’t working. It took me a good month/2 months before I was better. I couldn’t imagine being that sick and pregnant too. *HUGS*

I am loving the look of your quilt!! It’s very cute! Mum is bringing over some sesame street material that we are going to make into a quilt cover for Baby N’s bed! We have a few other sewing projects organised as well which I am looking foward to!!

Congrats to your BIL & SIL – that’s fantastic news!!

Glad the medicine is working! Being sick while pregnant is no good at all. My students have all had various colds and coughs recently so I am just trying to make sure to stay healthy for the next 2 days before I go on mat. leave. It is the season for stuff to be going around, that’s for sure.

I have been enjoying tea recently too, although I was never a big tea drinker. I recently discovered our local expat shop carries Celestial Seasonings teas and they’re great. They have a tea called Red Berry Zinger that I’ve been loving. Rasberry Leaf tea is supposed to tone your uterus and make labor easier too, so yay for that.

The quilt is great. I have a quilt still that my grandmother made for me when I was born. I don’t have a crafty bone in my body so DS doesn’t have any handmade stuff from me, but I’ve handed that quilt on to him. I am sure that will be a great keepsake for Goma-chan to hang onto when he grows up even.

Glad to hear you are on the mend! That’s great your clinic were happy for Shun just to come in and get your medication. Hope you stay healthy for your last few weeks of pregnancy.

That’s great news about your SIL. I am a bit sad that L won’t have much cousin interaction in Japan. Hub has an older sister who went of the rails when she was younger (and even now really!) and has a 17 year old son! They live in Kumamoto so we only see them a couple of times a year but the age difference is a bit much anyway. My brother did get married this year and I think him and his wife are keen to start trying so hopefully L and baby no. 2 will have some little cousins to play with in Australia in the not so distant future.

I make soup a lot and usually eat them all week until they run out but have frozen them in the past with ok results. I am pretty sure I have frozen minestrone and pumpkin before and they were fine.

Glad that you are feeling better. There’s nothing worse than feeling poorly, especially when you are full of baby :P

I had a private student come to my house when Luka was about 2 months old. She came three times a week for two hour lessons. I sat Luka in the bouncy chair and rocked him while I taught. He is such a Mummy’s boy, but as long as he was facing me, he was calm. At times he did niggle a bit though. After the first hour, I used to go off to feed him, and my student reviewed her first lesson and had a cuppa. I’m not sure it would work now though, with him being so clingy, but I would say the “newer born” the better.

I also taught in youchien and hoikuen when Hannah was around one year old. They took care of her in the baby class (一時保育) while I taught for two hours. I had to pay 1500 yen though..

Ooh, and I forgot to say, your quilt is lovely! I’m sure Goma chan will adore it.

Glad to hear you’re feeling better and a plus one for compliments on the quilt! Lucky Goma-chan :)

I personally think pureed soups tend to freeze better than ones with chunky veg etc but I think that’s just me…I’m weird about textures of things… Any pasta might be a bit mushy second time around too. I always make sure it’s completely cool before freezing, and leave a gap between the top of the soup and the lid to allow for any expansion. This week I am going to make a broccoli and blue cheese soup as it was only 98yen for a big bunch at the supermarket the other day, yay.

Hey been reading the blog, a few of my friends are having babies and it interesting to hear how everyones getting on! Glad your feeling better! Not long to go now, hope everything goes smoothly for the three of you :)
I have a new blog I write for my university course which I’ll put in below and my music blog has almost reached the 7000 views mark in juts over a year so I’m quite pleased! Not so much blogging about my own life though – don’t think I’m ready for that again lol

I recommend cream of asparagus soup, or I like lentil curry soup but I’m not sure what spices are available to you there. I love my winter veggie soups! ooh and Vietnamese soups though I’ve never made any at home xxx
