First taste…

Noah had his first taste of rice cereal last week. He had a bit of a stuffy nose and it was making him frustrated when he was feeding so I decided to bite the bullet and feed him a bit of cereal to see what he thought and also in the hope that he would eat something since drinking milk was just making him angry. He has had it 2 times since then! I mix so much breast milk with it that really it is just like drinking breast milk from a spoon! HAHA!

From the time he is five months(next week!) I plan to start giving him a little bit each day (of rice cereal) and then from about six months will start introducing some veggies and fruit.

He was a bit unsure at first

But then he thought he liked it

He also liked that Daddy was feeding him for a change

Then it got messy- and he started demanding more by flapping his arms up and down.

And then mama had a go. And he giggled because he loved it so much

What is your experience with solids? What did your kids like? When did you start?

  1. Oh SO CUTE! I love the first photo – when he’s older and chomping on steak, you should show him the photo of him being completely unsure of rice cereal! Hehe. Love the flapping arms, awwwwww. :)

  2. Rachael in Syd

Great photos! I like the 2nd one when he realises it tastes good lol ::)

  3. Love that first picture!!
I think Ash went through the very same stages but he didn’t really take to it and went straight on to stewed apples and stuff. Good luck with it!

We`ve only have done the rice cereal so far. I did try some multi-grain stuff last week that my mom sent but Misora`s diaper rash got a lot worse and I thought that might be causing it (not sure I just know that once we started with the rice cereal she has been pooping with almost every diaper which makes her tushy a lot more raw than when it was 1 or 2 times a day).

I had thought to start veggies this month but the ILs are coming at the beginning of June and quite frankly I don`t want MIL to give her anything (she wanted to send down snack foods for her to eat which I am against giving at the moment since they don`t really have nutritional value). So I am planning on waiting until after she leaves.

  5. Mmm! Yummy! Noah looks so cute in the first one!

    Solids…Um I started rice cereal with my mom when Missha was 4months… started giving her some of the kyupi baby jars at 5months until 6months because I could never mash anything fine enough. But after 6-7months I’ve been making her food myself. Now I just slap a piece of toast, bananas, pasta w/e on the highchair and watch her make a mess (only half of which gets in her mouth lol) It’s so fun when they can do finger foods, but now I have to wash half the floor 3 times a day ><;;;;

I think we moved pretty fast with solids, but she continually showed all the signs of being ready. I guess having teeth early helps? She can already chew lots of things!

  6. What a great photo story! I smell a scrapbooking project…

    And he’s so so cute.

Our solids story? Waited forever, started extremely slowly and carefully and still got allergies. Yup, one of the less successful stories, here.

Same process with Amy and she’s allergy free though so who knows, huh?

  7. super cute photos, esp the first one of Noah!! love it!

Have fun with solids! Are you giving farex? I just got my parents to bring some more boxes of farex over this time for L (still a few months down the track, but need to get my supply haha.) . I think I started K on solids at about 7months, but that was because we had been home to Oz for a month or so and I couldn’t be bothered starting until we were settled back in Japan. One of the first veges we had was sweet potato. She also loved her avocado, tofu and bananas – great portable food when going out!

  8. Adorable! I love the commentary and the progression of photos!!

  9. So cute! I can’t remember when I started Hannah on solids, but Luka started at six months. I followed the health guidelines of babies being too young for their stomach to handle anything until then, and we had one or two days of rice cereal. He didn’t really take to it much, so then I moved on to banana, apple, sweet potato, pumpkin, courgette, peas, carrots, etc., just to get his first tastes in. To be honest, he was more of a breastfeeder, so he didn’t really get into solids until he was one. But then to be fair, I didn’t make much of an effort to cut down the breastfeeding until then anyway. He was happier with finger foods, so I tried the baby-led weaning method for a while and he seemed much happier with it. I’ve read lots of things that say babies are often ready for feeding earlier than six months too, but it was just the method that I chose personally. How is Noah sleeping now he’s on solids? Is he still nursing as much? He certainly looks very excited by food :)

  10. OMG, he is so cute! I also love his mohawk. :)

We started “solids” at about 5 months and led off with thin vegetable soup. The Pinglet used to hum while she was eating…it was pretty funny!

  11. So cute! I gave Annika rice cereal once a week or so ago and she seemed to enjoy it, but haven’t tried it again since. Dylan was pretty slow to start on solids. We gave him some cereal in his bottle from about 6 months but as for real food with spoons and stuff he wasn’t really into it until I guess about 10 months or so.

We started with okayu mixed with breast milk. Once P was used to that I started adding in steamed, pureed veggies. Broccoli was first I think. I always had an icecube tray full of okayu and another with a pureed veggie. When it came time to eat I just defrosted and warmed one of each, put in some breast milk and mixed. P loved it. I did one new veggie every 5-7 days to check for allergic reactions. Its really easy to make baby food. Noah looks so happy eating! Cute!

  13. So cute! Ali had no time for rice cereal, so when he was about 6 months (the advice on when to start solids is different in different countries) I started him on pureed pumpkin and apple and things like that which he liked more, but he was still pretty ambivalent and preferred to feed. At maybe 8 months I started giving him finger food like little bits of chicken and cheese and vegies, or strips of banana, and that was when he started getting really excited about food.

  14. Oh my that’s gorgeous. That first photo is priceless!!
I started my Chop at five months, He was never really into food and still isn’t. Bump started at six months and she will eat anything and everything- I’m hoping it stays that way ;)

  15. The current stuff re solids seems to be 4-6 months. If they look hungry from 4, give the rcereal a whirl!

  16. Tiffany

What great photos! He has such wonderful expressions :)

OMG, SQUASH! They both loved squash. I could feed it pureed alone or mixed with cereal. Sweet potatoes, chicken and rice puree..nothing they wouldn’t eat except for green beans.
