Milestones at 5 months…

I pulled out my copy of “What to expect the first year” book tonight to read up on solid foods and feeding and was interesting to read through “The fifth month” section to see some of the questions they answer (totally things I have thought/asked myself) and also the milestones list.

So for prosperity sake (so that I can remember stuff too- I posted on Nay`s blog earlier that I thought Noah was about 4.8kg at 6 weeks like Leilah but a check in her boshi techo showed he was a a kilo bigger than that at 2 months so I guess I was wrong?! Hard to keep track!) a list of milestones that 5 months old should have, probably have, may have reached…

By 5 months, your baby…

should be able to:

- hold head steady when upright (Yep- Noah has been doing this for months)
- on stomach, raise chese, supported by arms (Yep)
- pay attention to an object as small as a raisin (Yep)
- squeal in delight (Yep, he has been laughing for months now too)
- smile spontaneously (Yep- often at me if I just talk to him, or start singing and often at his toys or at Shun)
- smile back when you smile (yep)
-grasp a rattle held to backs or tops of fingers (yep)
- keep head level with body when pulled to sitting (yep)

will probably be able to:

- roll over one way (yep, he can roll over both ways but definitely does tummy to back more often)
- bear some weight on legs (yep, loves to stand)
- say ah-goo or similar vowel consonant combinations (yep, if I sing he also likes to try and sing too)
-razz/make a wet razzing sound (No, I don`t think he does this. I am not exactly sure what this means. He doesn`t blow raspberries yet though so maybe that is what this is)
- turn in the direction of a voice (yes, and he is starting to recognize his name)

may possibly be able to:

- Sit without support (yep, did this just before 4 months)

may even be able to:
- pull up to a standing position from sitting (Yep, if this means he does this with me. If it means he does it alone then no, he can`t pull himself into a standing position by himself but he does do it holding onto my hands)
- stand holding on to someone or something (yep)
- object if you try to take a toy away (yep, he throws mini tantrums now)
- work to get to a toy out of reach (yep, does this by stretching, rolling etc)
- pass a cube or other object from one hand to the other (yep, he can pass toys back and forth. He does it with his star/moon rattle a lot)
- look for a dropped object (yep, and often cries if he can`t reach it himself again)
- rake with fingers a tiny object and pick it up in a fist (Yep)
- babble, combining vowels and consanants such as ga ga ga, ba ba ba, ma ma ma, da da da….Yeah he does ma ma sometime and ba ba too. Not sure about the others. He talks back if I talk to him though.

So I guess we have to work on “razzing” whatever that is…he smacks his lips together but doesn`t make raspberries so I will take this as meaning blowing raspberries.

Apparently in month six the things that he may even be able to do include creep or crawl, get into a sitting position from stomach, feed himself a cracker or finger food, pick up things in a pincer grip (thumb and forefinger)

It seems some of the more physical milestones like lifting his head and sitting he has reached quite early- I think he will be keeping me on my toes even more in a month or so! EEK!

  1. Wow! Noah is pretty advanced, I am pretty sure Sakura wasn’t doing all that stuff at five months… maybe only 3/4s of whats listed up there.

You are going to have your hands full for sure, but hey its fun! Keeps us on our toes, eh?

PS I saw on Nay’s blog that the nurse lady called you again.. wtf?! Why was she calling you?

  2. Ah,fun times ahead! My DD1 was an early crawler and walking at just before 9 months.Amazing how quickly these little ones develop in just a matter of weeks and months.Milestones indeed! And the razzing was a late one for both mine but when they did it,they didn’t stop.Bet Noah will soon get the hang of his rasberries;)

  3. Wow! still has trouble with some of that list and he will be one in a few weeks :) But now that he is crawling, bloody hell. He fell down the genkan step this morning – thankfully onto a pile of shoes and not cold hard tiles. If I was a good Japanese wife and had all the shoes away properly he’d have a big egg on his forehead. Yay for smelly kids shoes.

And I have no idea what razzing is either but I’m pretty confident that Ryu is behind the eight ball on that one too.

Noah continually shocks me with how advanced he is for his age!! You definitely have an early learner with Noah. He is going to be up and about before you know it!

Going to check my book and see how Leilah is going with her milestones…

  6. What a clever little man!!

And yep razzing is blowing raspberries ;)
