About me

I am just a twenty something Aussie girl living in Chiba, Japan with my Japanese husband trying to make sense of the crazy Japanese world we live in! We welcomed our first son in December 2009 (Noah) and a second son in January 2011, 2 months premature (Shion). I am working hard at raising them to be confident, bilingual, happy kids!

How I ended up in Japan…

Well in 2003 in started university in a Bachelor of Arts course thinking that once I improved my grades I would transfer out to another course except I started studying Japanese, loved it, and applied to go on exchange the following year almost certain that I would not get accepted. Well I got accepted, went to Japan for a year, studying at a university in Kichijoji, Tokyo and had the time of my life….Just before I left to return to Australia I met Shumpei, and while it sounds corny it was love (or at least lust) at first sight! I had to return to Australia to finish my degree and as soon as that was done (I didn`t even stick around for my graduation!) I moved back to Japan after a little detour through Europe! We had a quick year in Australia 2008/2009 before we returned to Japan late May of 2009 where we settled in Chiba.

Why the blog…

I originally started blogging because I wanted to keep in contact with people back home in Australia without having to write numerous emails. Although now I blog because people actually read my ramblings and I have met many wonderful people through blogging and I don`t want that to stop!

Have kept journals on and off for many years and though it was about time that I went digital! I still keep a paper journal so that I can have a place to put my other rantings and stuff that wouldn`t be suitable for public consumption!

Other stuff…

Shun (husband) & I are lived in Brisbane Australia for a year until after our wedding which was on May 9, 2009. It wasn`t really a planned move but it worked out okay and let Shun experience life in Australia and allowed me to spend some time with my family.

We shared an apartment in Kichijoji for 18 months (which was a crazy 26m2 one room place) and then we lived in an apartment in Nakano (until April 2008)  and I worked at an International preschool in Kichijoji (The best suburb in Tokyo!). I wish we still lived in Kichijoji but we wanted a bigger place (Instead of the tiny shoebox we lived in up until August 2007) and couldn`t afford the rent on a bigger place in Kichijoji! After the stint in Australia we moved to Funabashi, Chiba. Shun & I communicate in Japanese although don`t go thinking I am fluent because I am just lucky that I snagged myself a Japanese guy that understands the crazy Japanese that comes out of my mouth!

I grew up in Brisbane, Australia I went to highschool there and then onto Griffith University to do a Bachelor or Art majoring in Japanese and Public Relations. I also have a minor in journalism.

I love Japan, traveling, Australian music, all kinds of books, pink, green, strawberries, white wine, taking photos, blogging, writing, reading, food (both cooking and eating it), kids, meeting new people, magazines, crafty stuff, karaoke, cherry blossoms, shopping, izakayas, storms, chocolate and a lot of other stuff!

I dislike liars, daikon, housework, nato, stress, being broke and humidity

  1. My daughter is visiting a friend in Japan soon, so I’m going to read every word on your blog! Carolyn

  2. Love that your doing this. First because I’m a Pan-asian just like your lovely children! I was born and raised in Singapore by a Caucasian American father and a Chinese Singaporean mother. Second, because I think it’s great for people back in the States to be opened up to lots more culture. When I moved to the States for college a few years ago, I felt like many of the people I met never really knew anything outside of their state, some even town. Hopefully you can show everyone how great Asia is :D
