Finished…

Well technically I have finished the spring reading thing challenge because I reached my goal of ten books. To read about the challenge see here. I chose 20 books and had to read 10 of them between March 21st and June 21st.

I ended up sticking to what I know and like pretty much throughout the whole challenge. In other words, authors I like and chick-lit. Even though I have finished the challenge now, the rest of the books that were originally on my list are now on my `To be read` list…for anytime. My original post, that included my list can be found here

I didn`t end up reading any classics as such…despite a couple being on my list. I will get around to them eventually!!!!

I am not a book reviewer. I don`t think I could do it…but I thought I should at least post up the books I ended up reading for the challenge and give a comment or two.

At First Sight by Nicholas Sparks

I usually always like Nicholas Sparks` books. This one was good too. I just don`t think I liked it as much as some of his others….That said the story was still really well written, and I always enjoy books that have a twist at the end, even If I could see this one coming from the beginning. It is good though because I don`t always read a lot of books by males and I really should read more of them.

The Memory Keeper`s Daughter by Kim Edwards

Fantastic. Anyone who hasn`t read this should go buy a copy now. It took me a little while to get into it, but once I was in I couldn`t stop. I can see why this has been a best seller. I am taking it back to Australia so my mum can read it because I know she will love it too.

It makes you think a lot, about how you would handle having a mentally handicapped child. People deal with this everyday. But I doubt I am the only person, who when they imagines what their children are going to like, imagine a child that has problems or is sick.

Something borrowed by Emily Giffin

Chick lit. It is pretty much what I read most of the time. The books that I read that are non chick lit have usually been best sellers or by authors I have read before and loved (For example Nicholas Sparks, Jeffrey Archer, Murakami and Jodi Piccolt)

This book was really good. And while it was about a girl who has an affair with her best friends fiancee you can`t help but want her to win the battle because her friend is a bit of a bitch. I am sure everyone has had a friendship that was slightly toxic. Someone that you got on with really well but when the friendship ended you look back and think `What was I thinking, that person was a real bitch`…One of those people that always had to be better than you, put you down etc etc. Well if you have ever had a friendship like this (or are in one and think it is time you move on) then you should read this book!! Easy read, but not just a normal chick-lit quick read.

Under the Duvet by Marian Keyes

I like Marian Keyes. I usually pick up her books as soon as they come out. I almost always enjoy books by British and Irish females as well!!! This is a book of short articles, most of which have already been published in newspapers in Ireland etc. There were also a couple of other never before published pieces. I think I enjoy reading these kind of short articles/stories more now since I keep a blog. It makes me jealous though that people can spin out a fantastically written piece and put into words the way I wish I could put stuff into words.

The best thing about these sorts of books too is that you can read one story, put the book down and come back to it anytime. You can mix and match and read it back to front if you want to also!

Mad River Road by Joy Fielding

I am not sure how I cam across Joy Fielding in the beginning. I have a feeling though it has only been in the last year or so that I have started reading her books. She is a suspense writer i guess you would say. Her books are usually fairly easy to read, quiet compulsive and usually have a twist at the end. I love the twists. I didn`t see this one coming either!!! Anyone who likes suspense/crime novels, but isn`t into all the blood and gore that sometimes come with them, should check this book out! Or other books by her.

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan

I will definitely have to check out more books by this author. I have heard great things about her and am so glad i finally read this book. It is about four sets of mothers and daughters who are Chinese, and Chinese-American. It deals with cultural identity and the mother-daughter relationship that any female with a mother could relate too! I liked it…would love to hear a suggestion for the next Amy Tan novel I should try!!

Diary of a mad mum to be by Laura Wolf

I am always a sucker for books in diary form. I don`t know why. The first one I read as a kid was Zlata`s diary, I was about 10 or 11 and I couldn`t even contemplate how a girl my own age (at the time) could be living through what she was living through (A brilliant YA novel that everybody should read)

Anyway back to my love of diary form books, of course this one is not as thought provoking as Zlata`s diary it is still a good read. Fairly typical chick-lit book!!!! I liked her crazy friends!

Shopaholic and baby by Sophie Kinsella

Sophie Kinsella`s books are always good for an easy read, especially if you like chick-lit. I think I am just over the shopaholic series though. This one and the last one have been a bit too much…I still read them, and I wouldn`t say I didn`t enjoy them I guess I have just read a lot of other good books recently that it hasn`t rated really high on my good books list. I recommend the first two though!!!

The Botox Diaries by Janice Kaplan and Lynn Schnurnberger

It was just ok. I will read pretty much anything and this was ,like I said, Ok. I guess I am chick-litted out a bit though…Probably number 10 on the list of the books I have read.

Balzac and the Chinese Seamstress by Dai Sijie

Another great book. It is these types of books though that make me realize I really do not know enough about history. Anyone with an interest in history, especially Asian modern history should read this book. It makes you realize how lucky you are to have access to education, books, technology and freedom.

*********************************************************************************

I went on a little book shopping spree the other day with James too. He took me to Kinokuniya in Shinjuku. I have been to the one on the otherside of the station but never to the one connected to Takashimaya. I have no idea why I have never been before! I got new gossip mags (I am a sucker!) plus six new books. All of which are by authors I have read before….Two which I can not wait to read include Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult and Thinking of you by Jill Mansell. Have just started Thinking of you today….I want to read Nineteen Minutes so much but am saving it for the plane ride next week! I know If I start it now I will forget to pack, eat and possibly go to work!!!!

Spring reading thing…

P3180002

I talked about this challenge already a little bit on Monday but now it is official and I have put together a list of 25 books, of which, 10 I have to read before June 21st for the Spring Thing Challenge. As today is the first official day of Spring (Is it just me, or does everyone else think that Spring actually starts on March 1st…In japan they say Spring starts today, and apparently they do in America too. It is even a public holiday here) So here is my list (including amazon links..In case anyone is so inspired by my list of books that they wish to purchase them!)…Most of them I own already but I have put a couple of other books that I have been meaning to buy and read, or books that are coming out this spring! Oh and the reason behind the huge list,(despite my goal being 10 books) is that I am a mood reader so I wanted to still give myself something to choose from.

So here goes, my list for

I`m watching you by Karen rose

Plus five books that I don`t actually own at the moment but that I want to read and hope to own soon

Eat Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss

Lean Mean Thirteen by Janet Evanovich

Nineteen minutes by Jodi Picoult ( I love her…I have read everything else she has written and only realized recently she had released a new book)

Broken Flower by V.C Andrews

Ok, well I can`t come up with a fifth, so it is a free choice. A bit like a wildcard! I don`t want to limit myself too much!

I heart books…

When I was about 11, grade six, i remember attending the St Rita`s school fete and spending less than 10 dollars but taking home more than a 100 books (I was given 10 days for the day and it all went to books except for a drink I think). A lot of them were light weight crap, but I read them all…I was on crutches at the time (Not the first, and not the last let me tell you!) and my mum`s friend heather had to carry the boxes of books to her car for me since I couldn`t do it. It was near school holidays when I bought the books…and I read a couple a day for the whole holidays. I love books, I have always loved books. There are photos of me as a toddler on the toilet reading books, reading to my dolls and bears and sitting on the floor pouring theough my parents ancient funken wagnells.

My parents were supposed to move while I was in Japan in 2004/2005 so before I left I had to pack up my room and I was limited to one box of books that I could keep. I have over 500 books for sure and I sold a lot of them to a second hand book store on the goldcoast and gave the rest to the mater hospital in Brisbane. I had never parted with books well. No matter how old or crappy they are, I always wanted to keep them. Even if it meant having piles and piles of books in my closet, and the spare room closet, and on my floor and on my book shelves. I kept books that I would want my children to read, especially if they were girls, as well as my favourite books. But I actually did fairly well at clearing them out. Now that I live in an apartment the size of a shoebox I am limited to how many books I can keep here. I have a small bookshelf and one shelf has non-fiction that I keep. Mainly travel guides, writing guidlines and some history stuff. The other shelf has japanese-language and study books. And I have allowed one shelf for fiction that is always overflowing…But I can keep about 30 to 35 fiction books in the apartment at a time…so I have to part with books a lot more than I used to. I realize now though that I have to get serious, stop buying more books, and read the ones I have.

I might not be what the call a `well-read` person but I have read more than my fair share of books. Considering the amount of books I read it is a wonder why my spelling and grammar are still so bad but that is another story. I remember reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time as a kid. My grandmother in New Zealand had sent me a copy and it had been bounded upside down by mistake. By the time she realized and took it back there were no more so she sent it to me anyway, with a note that said `Sorry you`ll have to read it upside down/back to front but you`ll be the only girl with an upside down copy of Anne of Green Gables`. I still have it.

Lately I have had a hard time getting into a book (In fact I have been starting books and not finishing them and putting them back on the bookshelves to start another…This is not like me at all). It isn`t like I read really in depth stuff. There are a couple of reasons behind this I think (This been that I can`t seem to get into a book). One is that I don`t catch the train or public transport much anymore and that was always my time for reading, and if I was into a book then when I got home I would lie on the bed and read some more yet now that I don`t have that I never seem to have enough time to get into a book. Two, my eyesight is getting worse and I kept forgetting to wear my glasses when I read meaning that the words all kind of blur together making me tired very quickly. Three, I haven`t come across a really good book recently and usually when you read a really good book and finish it it makes you want to read more.

I have realized that I needed something to get me motivated and reading again. There are lots of reading challanges out there on different blogs and website (I have been thinking about books and reading a lot in the last week and have started reading a lot of book, writing and reading blogs that review books and blogs of people that read a lot), but most start at the begining of a year. I did come across this one though and the guidelines are fairly loose so I thought I would sign up in the hope that it would give me some motivation. It is for spring, and starts later on in the week and more info can be found here

I can choose any amount of books and while I have a lot of stuff that I already own laying around the apartment and I recently picked up a few classics that I feel I SHOULD read. I aim to read at least 10 books during the challange although since I am a bit of a mood reader I will put up 20 or so books and will choose the 10 from there. I will put the list up in a couple of days, because to be a proper participant I have to give a list.

So who else there likes reading? Leave me info about books if you think I should read them. I usually read anything, (except science fiction mainly…but I don`t like to exclude anything!) and am always up for suggestions.

Another meme…

This time it is about books. One of my favourite things. I was tagged by Jen, one of my new found blogging friends (maybe a future swapping friend).

One book you have read more than once:

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, although i haven’t read it again for quite a few years. It is a very special copy my Kiwi nana gave me when i was about 8 or 9. It was the thickest book i had ever been given and it is had Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea in it. It was especially special (Can those two words go together?) because it was upsidedown. You’d open the book and have to turn it upsdide down to read it. Also, Looking for Alibrandi would have to be a book i have read SOOOO many times that i can’t even count them.

One book you would want on a desert island:

I would want a book by Jodi Picoult that i havn’t read before. Although i think i have read them all now, BRING ON A NEW BOOK JODI! She is my current favourite…

One book that made you laugh:

The whole Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. These are all laugh out loud books but her first couple are by far the best and if you like funny crime books these are for you. Another book read recently that made me laugh out loud was “Around the World in 80 dates” by Jennifer Cox who used to part of the PR team for Lonely Planet which must have been an awesome job.

One book that made you cry:

Alison by Margaret Watts, I read it when i was quite young and there have been a few books since then that have made me cry but this was the first of many.

One book you wish you had written:

Harry Potter series by JK Rowling because i like money, and i recon that now she must have a lot of it. Also because she is obviously so talented to be able to grab such a large audiance for her books and i guess i wouldn’t of minded having some of that talent. Either that or Dan Brown’s The Da Vinci Code for the same reasons.

One book you have been meaning to read:

Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis. My brother reccomended it, and he never reads so if he has enjoyed a book it must be good.

One book that changed your life:

One book that has always stuck in my mind was something i read while still in highschool (which is when i think books have the most impact on someones life in terms of changing it) and it was a book reccomended by a friend Lucy who i used to sing with at school. I ran into back in Australia recently and it was intresting to hear that she no longer sings anymore…if you read this lucy you should start again! You (and Alana) were both so talented. But anyway i am getting off track. The book was Anna’s Story by Bronwyn Donaghy. A book based on a true story of a 15 year old (The age i was when i read this book) girl who died after taking half anecstasy tablet at a Sydney rave party.

If someone feels they would like to do this meme, feel free. I don’t think i know enough people that would agree to do it!!!
